How we compare

Last updated: October 19, 2026

This page explains how GoldexPay calculates and ranks the offers you see in our comparison. We want you to be able to check our numbers yourself, so we describe the method, the data sources and the limitations in full.

The mid-market rate

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of a currency, cryptocurrency or precious metal on the wholesale market. It is the fairest reference point available, because it contains no margin for any provider. We use it as the benchmark for every comparison.

Fees versus exchange-rate markup

Providers earn money in two ways, and often combine them:

  • Fees – a percentage of the amount, a fixed fee, or both, sometimes with a minimum fee.
  • Exchange-rate markup – a less favourable rate than the mid-market rate. This cost is less visible, because it is "hidden" in the rate rather than shown as a fee.

A provider advertising "no fees" may still be expensive because of its markup. That is why we always include both.

How we calculate

For each provider offer we store a percentage fee, a fixed fee (in a specific fee currency), a minimum fee, the exchange-rate markup on the mid-market rate, minimum and maximum amounts, and the supported currencies or assets. We then calculate:

  1. Fee = max(minimum fee, amount × fee% + fixed fee)
  2. Amount received = (amount − fee) × mid-market rate × (1 − markup%)
  3. Total cost = amount − (amount received ÷ mid-market rate)

The total cost expresses everything you lose compared to the mid-market rate – fees and markup together – in the currency you send. Offers are only shown if the amount you enter falls within the provider's minimum and maximum amounts and the currency pair is supported.

How results are sorted

Results are sorted by the amount you receive, highest first. The commission we may earn from a provider plays no role in this order.

Featured providers

A provider can be marked as "Featured". Featured providers are shown at the top of the results, above the regular ranking, and always carry a visible "Featured" label. Below them, the ranking by amount received applies without exception. More about our commercial relationships can be found in our affiliate disclosure.

Data sources and update frequency

  • Currency rates – mid-market rates from currency-rates.github.io, which uses the median of multiple rate providers.
  • Cryptocurrency prices – CoinGecko.
  • Historical fiat rates – European Central Bank reference rates via the Frankfurter API.
  • Provider fees – the providers' public fee schedules.

Mid-market rates are refreshed every 30 minutes. Fee data is checked periodically. All rates and results are indicative.

Limitations

  • The provider's final quote always prevails. The amount you actually receive can differ from our calculation.
  • Weekend surcharges, payment-method fees (for example for card payments), account tiers and promotions may not be reflected.
  • Markets move. Crypto and precious metal prices in particular can change significantly within minutes.
  • Fee schedules change. Although we check them periodically, there may be a delay before a change appears on GoldexPay.

How providers are selected

To be listed, a provider must:

  • be regulated or registered with the relevant authority where this is required for its services;
  • be available to consumers in the European Union;
  • run an affiliate programme.

We want to be honest about that last criterion: at present we only list providers that have an affiliate programme. This means our comparison does not cover the entire market, and a provider that is not listed may offer you a better deal.

Do you see a fee, rate or detail that looks wrong? Please let us know at [email protected], preferably with the provider, currency pair, amount and a link to the source. We review every report and correct errors as soon as possible. See also our contact page and disclaimer.
