Frequently asked questions

How high is the natural gas price right now?

At the moment one MMBtu of natural gas costs 2.90 USD. That equals 9.88 USD per megawatt hour. We last updated this price on October 30, 2026 7:30 PM.

Can I invest in natural gas?

Investing in natural gas usually happens through futures, exchange-traded commodities (ETCs) or shares of energy companies, not physical delivery. Products based on futures can perform differently from the price on this page because contracts roll over. This is general information, not investment advice.

What is an MMBtu?

Natural gas in the US is quoted per MMBtu: one million British thermal units, about 293 kWh of energy. With the price at 2.90 USD per MMBtu that is 9.88 USD per megawatt hour. European gas (TTF) is quoted per MWh and can trade at very different prices.

What drives the natural gas price?

Energy prices depend on supply and demand: production decisions by OPEC+ and US producers, inventories, refinery capacity and economic growth. The weather has a big impact on demand for gas and heating oil, and conflicts in producing regions can cause sharp price swings.

Where does this natural gas price come from?

The price is based on the nearest futures contract (NG=F) as reported by Yahoo Finance and may be delayed. Futures prices are not exactly the same as the physical spot price, and the contract rolls over at expiry.

What was the peak of the natural gas price over the past five years?

Over the past five years the natural gas price peaked at 9.68 USD on August 22, 2022. Its low was 1.58 USD on March 26, 2024, based on daily prices.
