Gold Price per Gram Calculation
How to turn a gold price per ounce into a price per gram
If you want the price of gold per gram, start by taking the price per troy ounce and dividing it by 31.1035, which is the exact number of grams in a troy ounce. That's really all there is to the calculation itself, but it's common to get the wrong unit.
Everyday ounces (they're 28.35 grams) won't give you the right number. They're not what gold markets use. The difference, and why only troy ounces work here, is covered fully in our guide to troy ounces.
You'll see gold prices change often, and any quote is only good at a specific moment. What you get from this math is just the raw gold content, without any dealer margin. Most sellers add a premium on top, so expect to pay a fair bit more than this in the shop or online.
Getting the price per kilo or for a tola
If you're after the gold price per kilo, take your price per gram and multiply by 1,000. Let's say that came to 64.30 in your currency per gram. The kilo price is then 64,300 for every full kilogram.
The tola is another unit you might see, especially in South Asian gold shops. One tola equals about 11.66 grams. For a price per tola, multiply the per-gram rate by 11.66. That same 64.30 per gram gives you just under 750 units per tola.
Both these translations are only ever about multiplying or dividing, never more complicated than that. It's always smart to recalculate using your own figures before accepting a dealer’s offer. You can also see how the pure gold value fits into scrap offers in our guide to scrap gold values.
Switching gold prices between currencies
Gold is typically listed in US dollars on most international pricing feeds. If you want to know the price in pounds or euros, you'll need to use the exchange rate: multiply a dollar price by the rate (when the rate shows local currency per dollar), or divide by the rate (if it’s in dollars per unit of your own currency). Always double-check which way round the rate runs before you calculate.
Rates can shift throughout the day, so your converted price will too. So, use the same timing and convert every quote into the same currency and unit before making any comparison. Fees for currency exchange (sometimes listed separately, sometimes included in the spread) will also affect your true final bill.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the gold price per gram?
You can get the price per gram by dividing the troy ounce quote by 31.1035. For example, if you see 2,000 per troy ounce, that's just about 64.30 per gram. Check the exact currency and whether the number you’ve got already has a premium included, as that affects what you pay.
How do I convert gold price per gram to price per kilo?
Just multiply your per-gram price by 1,000. That means 64.30 per gram becomes 64,300 per kilo. You can then compare that directly to a dealer's kilo rate, being aware that sometimes fees and premiums are already included, and sometimes not.
