A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- VARI Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- FI Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- H1 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
SWIFT/BIC codes in Finland
On this page you find codes for 569 banks in Finland, 602 codes in all. A SWIFT code tells every bank in the chain exactly which bank is meant to get an international payment.
Every bank has its own page with its main code and if there are any, branch codes. The rest of this page covers the structure of the codes, what transfers cost and how to avoid mistakes.
Paying in EUR: what conversion costs you
The currency of Finland is the Euro (EUR). Money sent in a different currency will be exchanged into EUR on its way to the recipient.
Where the conversion happens has an effect on how much arrives, as rates and margins differ per bank. Often you pay less if you send EUR directly via a provider with a good rate so the receiving bank does not need to convert again. With bigger transfers, a seemingly small difference in the rate adds up quickly.
Most SWIFT codes in Finland: Suomen Pankki - Finlands Bank
Suomen Pankki - Finlands Bank tops the list of Finland banks in SWIFT/BIC codes. Its main office has SPFBFIHHXXX; that is usually the right code for a transfer.
Many codes usually means that the bank registers branches and departments separately. If not a branch code is given, the head office code SPFBFIHHXXX works for transfers to this bank.
Transfer times to Finland
How quickly a payment reaches Finland depends on several factors: which currency you send, the number of banks in between, daily processing deadlines and differences in time zone. Public holidays in either country add a day or more, because banks do not process payments on those days.
If the money seems late, the sender should contact the sending bank. Money transfer services usually show tracking online so you can follow the payment.
The cheapest way to send money to Finland
When you send money to Finland with your bank, the stated fee is only part of what you pay. Besides a fixed fee, correspondent banks can take a cut and, if currencies are converted, the bank usually applies a rate below the actual market rate.
That exchange rate margin is often the largest cost item. A simple test: set the rate you get against the mid-market rate and look at the difference.
Specialist money transfer services frequently use rates closer to the mid-market rate. GoldexPay lists these providers next to each other, showing what actually arrives in Finland.
Filter: banks in Finland with :letter
This list only shows the banks in Finland whose name starts with :letter in alphabetical order. The totals mentioned above still cover all banks in Finland and not only this selection.
Cannot find the bank? The registered name might start with a different letter – think of the full legal name instead of the brand. Use the full list for Finland when you do not know how the name is spelled.
Finland and the SEPA area
Inside SEPA, euro payments to Finland follow the same rules. The BIC field is usually optional for those payments.
A SWIFT code still come into play for payments in other currencies and for transfers from outside SEPA. SEPA transfers normally land within one business day, and instant transfers in seconds where both banks support them. Fees are generally low provided everything stays in euros; the conversion is where it gets expensive.
About our data and how to check a code
Have the recipient send you their bank details directly from a recent statement. When the code you were given differs from our list, do not guess – contact the recipient or their bank.
We collect bank codes from publicly available data and update our list from time to time. Still, banks merge or retire codes, so information can be out of date. Use this list as a starting point rather than the last word. GoldexPay is not a bank and is not affiliated with the banks listed.
Be wary of invoices containing a new account. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine – scammers use the codes of real banks.
What the letters in a Finland BIC mean
A BIC is 8 or 11 characters long. First comes four letters for the bank, followed by a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
No matter which bank, every code from Finland have the same fifth and sixth letters: the ISO code of the country. A code with other letters in that position come from a bank abroad, even if the bank name looks familiar.
When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the head office. In most cases the head office code is fine unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
Incoming international payments in Finland
For an international payment in Finland, the sender has to have more than the SWIFT code. In practice that means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and, often, your postal address.
Look up your bank in the list above and compare the code with your own bank details – your bank statement is the final word. Some banks also ask for the name and address of your bank; it does no harm to include it.
The amount you receive can be less than the amount sent. Correspondent banks can take a fee, and when currencies differ, an exchange rate margin comes on top. For business payments, state who bears the costs to avoid a shortfall.
