BTC to CAD explained
This overview brings together the price relationship between Bitcoin (BTC) and Canadian Dollar (CAD) and compares it with the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. At the latest update on October 30, 2026, 1 BTC buys 106,727.13 CAD, and a single CAD equals 0.0000093697 BTC.
That headline number is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between the price at which large banks buy BTC and the price at which they sell it. Treat it as a fair reference point: nobody earns anything on it directly, which is exactly why consumers almost never receive it in full.
What ends up on the CAD side depends on two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and the fee you see on the order screen. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, put them side by side and share simple habits to get closer to the mid-market rate when converting BTC to CAD.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Nearly every bank and app stay away from the rate of 106,727.13 itself. They shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. This is known as the spread. With a 2% markup, for instance, for every 100 BTC you convert, about 2 BTC worth disappears before the money arrives.
Besides the hidden margin, many providers ask for a separate fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, and those only show up at the end.
Be wary of anything sold as commission-free. The cost often sits in the rate instead. What really counts is the final CAD figure for an identical BTC amount, which is how the table above is sorted.
Practical ways to save on BTC/CAD
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive when the margin is high. The fairest figure to compare is the amount received, which combines margin and fee.
At foreign tills and cash machines, you may be asked whether to pay in BTC or in the local currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Always opt to pay in the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Timing plays a role too. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. When there is no deadline, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once BTC/CAD reaches a level you choose. That avoids guessing, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Sending less often but in larger amounts also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
Crypto spreads, network fees and custody
Where you convert matters a lot with crypto. On a trading platform, there is a gap between the buy and sell price, the spread, on top of a maker or taker fee. Easy buy buttons in apps usually quote a single price with the margin already included.
Withdrawing crypto from a platform, you pay a network or withdrawal fee. That fee does not depend on the amount, so it weighs more on small transactions. Make sure the sending and receiving side use the same network: mistakes here are rarely reversible.
Volatility is much higher than with regular currencies. A displayed price may be fixed only for a few seconds, while large trades risk slippage. The rate on this page is a reference point, not a guaranteed price.
Custody is another point to consider. If you leave crypto on a platform, the platform controls it, whereas in your own wallet you are fully responsible for the keys. Check that a platform is registered or licensed with a financial regulator where you live.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Only use providers that are regulated. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
A worked example with 0.0100 BTC
Take an amount of 0.0100 BTC. Using the reference rate of 106,727.13, you can work out the upper limit of what the recipient could get. In reality every provider keeps something, because margins and fees come off first.
Across the 3 providers in our comparison, Kraken gave the best result, with 1,062.47 CAD in the end. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.
Bear in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, whereas a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Run your own figure through the converter and check whether the order changes.
How our BTC/CAD comparison works
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, and work out how much CAD the recipient would end up with. We do this for 3 providers, so you can see the differences at a glance.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.
GoldexPay is independent. Some links on this page are affiliate links. That never changes the ranking: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
The BTC/CAD rate over twelve months
Across the last year, the price of BTC in CAD has changed by -30.78%. In that period the highest level was 155,188.34 CAD per BTC, while the low point came in at 83,276.31. The current 106,727.13 sits somewhere inside that range.
The distance between the high and the low shows how much the rate can move in practice. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, sometimes more than the choice of provider.
Exchange rates respond to news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If timing matters to you, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
