CAD to XAU explained
This page follows the rate for Canadian Dollar (CAD) and Gold (XAU), together with the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. At the latest update on October 30, 2026, 1 CAD equals 0.00018099 XAU, while 1 XAU comes to 5,525.02 CAD.
The figure at the top is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between what wholesale traders pay for CAD and what they ask for it. It works as a fair reference point: it contains no profit margin and no fees, which is exactly why you rarely get it as a private customer.
What ends up on the XAU side comes down to two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Below the converter and chart we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and share simple habits to keep more of your money when you swap Canadian Dollar for Gold.
Troy ounces, spot price and premiums
The standard unit for metals is the troy ounce, equal to roughly 31.1 grams. The codes XAU, XAG, XPT and XPD stand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, so the metal behaves like one side of a currency pair. The rate shown is the price of one troy ounce.
The rate is based on the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, to pay for production, distribution and the seller’s margin. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.
You can own precious metals in several forms. Keeping coins or bars yourself means arranging storage and insurance. Vault storage through a dealer costs a yearly fee, with the metal registered to you. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Taxes can change the picture. Within the EU investment gold usually carries no VAT, unlike most silver. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.
Exchange rate markup and fees on CAD/XAU
The majority of services will not give you the mid-market rate as such. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. This is known as the spread. With a 2% markup, for instance, for every 100 CAD you convert, about 2 CAD worth disappears before the money arrives.
Next to that markup, many providers add a visible fee. This is usually a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments other banks along the route may take their own cut, so the recipient gets less than you expected.
Be wary of anything sold as commission-free. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. What really counts is the total amount that arrives in XAU for the same amount of CAD, and that is the figure our table ranks on.
Larger transfers: what to check first
Make sure the provider is licensed. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own and that offers protection if the company fails.
Check names and account details twice. Mistakes are rarely fixed quickly with transfers abroad. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
How our CAD/XAU comparison works
Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 0.00018099. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much XAU the recipient would end up with. In total 0 providers are included, placed side by side.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 30, 2026 as the reference date. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.
GoldexPay is independent. Some of the links are affiliate links. That never changes the ranking: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Recent movement in the CAD/XAU rate
Over the past twelve months, the exchange rate moved by +22.78%. Within those twelve months the top of the range was 0.00018099 XAU per CAD, and the lowest was 0.00013724. The current 0.00018099 can be measured against those two levels.
That range between high and low shows how much the rate can move in practice. On a large conversion, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.
The rate reflects news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
How to get a better CAD to XAU rate
Look at the final amount, not just the fee. A low headline fee proves nothing because the margin can make up the difference. The number that matters is the XAU amount after every cost, which combines margin and fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a XAU country, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Choose the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.
Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once CAD/XAU reaches a level you choose. That avoids guessing, though there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Bundling smaller transfers means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
