Gold to Canadian Dollar: what you are looking at
This page tracks the price relationship between Gold (XAU) and Canadian Dollar (CAD) and compares it with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. As of October 30, 2026, one XAU is worth 5,435.33 CAD, while one CAD comes to 0.00018398 XAU.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate. It is calculated as the middle of the price at which large banks buy XAU and the price at which they sell it. Treat it as a fair reference point: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why consumers almost never receive it in full.
What you actually receive is shaped by two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the visible transfer or service fee. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and list practical steps to get closer to the mid-market rate when you change XAU into CAD.
Safety checks before you convert XAU to CAD
Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Check names and account details twice. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
Big sums usually trigger extra verification. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
How GoldexPay compares XAU to CAD providers
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, and work out how much CAD the recipient would end up with. The comparison covers 0 providers, so you can see the differences at a glance.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. The final price is always set by the provider itself, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.
GoldexPay is independent. Some of the links are affiliate links. That never changes the ranking: the provider that delivers the most CAD comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.
How to get a better XAU to CAD rate
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A small fee on its own says little if the rate is poor. What you want to know is the amount received, which combines margin and fee.
When you pay by card abroad, you can get a choice between your own currency and the local one. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Choose the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Timing can also matter. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. If you are not in a hurry, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but the target may never be reached.
Also check how you fund the transfer. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
Reading a gold or silver price
Gold and silver prices are expressed per troy ounce, equal to roughly 31.1 grams. In currency notation, gold is XAU, silver XAG, platinum XPT and palladium XPD, so the metal behaves like one side of a currency pair. One unit in this pair means one troy ounce.
That figure is the spot price: the market price for big bars traded between dealers. Retail products carry a premium above that price, because of manufacturing and dealer costs. The buyback price is normally lower than spot.
There are different ways to hold metal. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. An allocated vault account comes with storage costs but takes care of security. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Tax rules also differ. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. The information here is meant as background, not as advice.
Exchange rate markup and fees on XAU/CAD
Most providers stay away from the rate of 5,435.33 as such. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and keep the difference. People call this the exchange rate margin. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 XAU on every 100 XAU, without it ever appearing as a fee.
On top of the margin, a lot of services charge an explicit fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, and those only show up at the end.
Look twice at services that advertise free transfers. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. What really counts is the total amount that arrives in CAD for exactly the same sum, which is how the table above is sorted.
One year of XAU to CAD
Across the last year, the XAU/CAD rate moved by -19.87%. During that year the top of the range was 7,286.73 CAD per XAU, and the lowest was 5,435.33. Today’s rate of 5,435.33 is easy to place within that band.
The distance between the high and the low puts the movement into real terms. When you convert a substantial sum, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, even when the fee stays the same.
Rates are pushed around by news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
