Converting Hong Kong Dollar into Australian Dollar explained

The page you are reading tracks the price relationship between Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Australian Dollar (AUD) and compares it with what real providers charge to convert one into the other. At the latest update on October 31, 2026, 1 HKD equals 0.181310 AUD, and one AUD equals 5.5154 HKD.

The rate shown above is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between what wholesale traders pay for HKD and what they ask for it. It works as a neutral benchmark: it contains no profit margin and no fees, which is exactly why consumers almost never receive it in full.

What ends up on the AUD side is shaped by two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Below the converter and chart we take those costs apart, put them side by side and give concrete ways to get closer to the mid-market rate when you change HKD into AUD.

HKD and AUD around the world

Hong Kong Dollar is used in Hong Kong SAR China. Australian Dollar is used in Australia. That is useful to know for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.

The reasons for changing HKD into AUD vary: moving abroad, studying, doing business or sending a gift. Not every situation needs the same solution: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, while frequent smaller payments suffer more from flat charges.

The way money is paid out also differs per country. Account formats differ: IBAN in one place, account and routing numbers in another and in certain countries mobile wallets or cash collection are widely used. Ask the recipient for the exact details in advance.

A worked example with 10,000.00 HKD

Consider a transfer of 10,000.00 HKD. Using the reference rate of 0.181310, that marks the theoretical maximum of what the recipient could get. No service pays out that exact figure, because margins and fees come off first.

Looking at all 9 providers we track, Wise came out cheapest for this amount and paid out 1,804.30 AUD in the end. The gap between 1,804.30 AUD and the theoretical maximum shows the true cost, fees and margin combined.

Note that rankings shift with the amount you send. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Enter your own amount in the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.

How to get a better HKD to AUD rate

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little if the rate is poor. What you want to know is the amount received, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.

At foreign tills and cash machines, you may be asked whether to pay in HKD or in the local currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.

Watch the timing as well. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. If you are not in a hurry, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Sending less often but in larger amounts also cuts the impact of fixed fees.

Bank transfer or money transfer service for AUD?

A traditional bank sends your payment over the SWIFT network. The money can pass through one or more correspondent banks, each of which can deduct a charge. Expect anything from one to a few working days, with the full cost not always known upfront.

Dedicated providers take another route. They hold balances in both currencies, so your HKD stays in the HKD system and the recipient is paid in AUD from a local account. That is often faster and cheaper, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.

Delivery time depends on several factors: how you pay, the time of day, cut-off times and bank holidays in both countries. The very first payment may be slower as the provider completes its checks. Get verified before you need to send when a deadline is involved.

What banks and apps really charge for HKD to AUD

The majority of services stay away from the rate of 0.181310 as such. They shift the rate in their own favour and keep the difference. This is known as the markup. If the margin is 2%, then about 2 out of every 100 HKD never reach the recipient.

Next to that markup, most banks ask for a separate fee. It may be a fixed amount per transfer, a percentage of the amount or both at once. With international bank payments extra deductions can follow, and those only show up at the end.

Take a close look at anything sold as commission-free. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The only fair way to compare is the total amount that arrives in AUD for an identical HKD amount, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.

Recent movement in the HKD/AUD rate

Compared with a year ago, the HKD/AUD rate shows a change of -7.87%. Within those twelve months the rate peaked at 0.199318 AUD per HKD, and the bottom of the range was 0.176136. Today’s rate of 0.181310 is easy to place within that band.

The distance between the high and the low puts the movement into real terms. For a bigger amount, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, even when the fee stays the same.

Exchange rates respond to central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If you are waiting for a particular level, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.

Before you send: security and large amounts

Only use providers that are regulated. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own and that offers protection if the company fails.

Check names and account details twice. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.

For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Some also let you lock in a rate for a short period.

How GoldexPay compares HKD to AUD providers

We start from the live mid-market rate for HKD/AUD. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, and work out how much AUD the recipient would end up with. The comparison covers 9 providers, placed side by side.

The figures refresh every half hour, with October 31, 2026 as the reference date. The final price is always set by the provider itself, and it can differ slightly from our calculation, especially when markets are busy.

We are not owned by any provider. Some links on this page are affiliate links. They have no influence on the order: providers are sorted purely by how much AUD the recipient gets.
