AUD to USD: rate, costs and context

This overview tracks the rate for Australian Dollar (AUD) and US Dollar (USD) and compares it with the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. As of October 30, 2026, 1 AUD equals 0.702624 USD, while 1 USD equals 1.4232 AUD.

That headline number is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is calculated as the middle of the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. It works as the cleanest reference you can get: nobody earns anything on it directly, which is exactly why you rarely get it as a private customer.

What ends up on the USD side is shaped by two things: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Further down we explain how those costs work, put them side by side and give concrete ways to lose less on the exchange when you change AUD into USD.

The countries behind AUD and USD

Australian Dollar is used in Australia. US Dollar is used in United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama. Knowing this helps if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.

People convert AUD to USD for many reasons: paying suppliers, supporting relatives, buying property or simply travelling. What suits one case may not suit another: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, whereas frequent smaller payments are more sensitive to fixed fees.

The way money is paid out also differs per country. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet and in certain countries mobile wallets or cash collection are widely used. Have the recipient’s full details ready before you begin.

The AUD/USD rate over twelve months

Compared with a year ago, the price of AUD in USD moved by +7.48%. In that period the top of the range was 0.724748 USD per AUD, and the bottom of the range was 0.644520. The current 0.702624 is easy to place within that band.

The spread between the year’s extremes shows how much the rate can move in practice. On a large conversion, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, occasionally more than the difference between providers.

Exchange rates respond to central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you want to act on a certain rate, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.

Sending a larger amount from AUD to USD

Make sure the provider is licensed. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own.

Check names and account details twice. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.

Big sums usually trigger extra verification. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

What 1,000.00 AUD gets you in USD

Let’s use an amount of 1,000.00 AUD. Using the reference rate of 0.702624, that sum sets the ceiling for what is possible on the USD side. In reality every provider keeps something, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.

Of the 8 providers we compared, Revolut came out cheapest for this amount: the recipient gets 699.11 USD at the time of our last update. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.

Note that rankings shift with the amount you send. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Enter your own amount in the converter and check whether the order changes.

SWIFT versus local payout for AUD to USD

With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment via the SWIFT system. The money can pass through one or more correspondent banks, and each can take a fee. Expect anything from one to a few working days, with the full cost not always known upfront.

Specialised transfer services often work differently. They have local accounts on both sides, so no money physically crosses the border: you pay in locally and the recipient is paid out locally. This usually cuts both time and cost, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.

Speed is not down to the provider alone: your payment method, cut-off times and public holidays on either side. A first transfer can take longer while identity checks are done. Get verified before you need to send if the money has to arrive on a set date.

What banks and apps really charge for AUD to USD

The majority of services do not convert at the mid-market rate as such. They quote a slightly worse rate and keep the difference. This is known as the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 AUD on every 100 AUD, without it ever appearing as a fee.

Besides the hidden margin, a lot of services add a visible fee. This is usually a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or a mix of both. On classic bank transfers abroad extra deductions can follow, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.

Look twice at services that advertise free transfers. The cost often sits in the rate instead. The reliable test is the total amount that arrives in USD for the same amount of AUD, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.

About this comparison

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much USD the recipient would end up with. We do this for 8 providers, placed side by side.

Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 30, 2026 as the reference date. The final price is always set by the provider itself, since markets keep moving.

GoldexPay is independent. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which help pay for the site. That never changes the ranking: providers are sorted purely by how much USD the recipient gets.

Getting the most USD for your AUD

Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A small fee on its own says little because the margin can make up the difference. What you want to know is the amount received, which combines margin and fee.

When you pay by card abroad, you may be asked whether to pay in AUD or in the local currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Always opt to pay in the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.

Timing can also matter. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. For transfers that can wait, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once AUD/USD reaches a level you choose. It saves you from checking the rate every day, though the target may never be reached.

Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Bundling smaller transfers also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
