How a SWIFT/BIC code from Germany is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

IOVE Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
DE Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
H1 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Bank SWIFT codes for Germany

On this page you find codes for 2804 banks in Germany – 8518 codes altogether. A BIC tells the banks handling a transfer which institution is meant to get the money.

Look for the bank you need below and click through to see all codes we have and the details a transfer needs. Further down we explain how codes from Germany are built, how to send money to Germany without overpaying and how to check a code before you pay.

Incoming international payments in Germany

Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details about your account. In practice that means: your full name as your bank knows it, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

The code of your bank appears in the list on this page, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. Certain sending banks may also want the name and address of your bank, so keep it at hand.

What lands in your account can be lower than the amount sent. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate comes on top. Agree with the sender who covers the fees.

Germany and the Euro

The currency in Germany is the Euro (EUR). If you send money in a different currency, it has to be converted at some point: by your bank, an intermediary or the receiving bank.

Which bank converts the money makes a difference. Compare how much EUR the recipient gets via several services; the difference between options can be larger than you expect. On larger amounts, a seemingly small gap in the rate can be worth more than the fee.

How long does a transfer to Germany take?

There is no single delivery time for payments to Germany: many arrive the same day or the next while others need several business days. Bank holidays in either country can add extra days, because banks do not process payments on those days.

Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi for faster and traceable payments. Each gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR, which the sending bank can use to trace it. Specialist transfer services often show tracking online, which makes it easier to see where the money is.

SEPA transfers to Germany

Germany is a member of the SEPA area, the zone for uniform euro payments. When you send euros within SEPA, the IBAN is usually enough.

A SWIFT code still come into play when the currency is not euros and when the money comes from outside SEPA. SEPA transfers usually arrive by the next business day, and instant transfers in seconds where both banks support them. Costs stay low provided everything stays in euros.

How SWIFT codes from Germany are built

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. Characters one to four stand for the bank, the fifth and sixth characters form the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.

You can recognise a bank code from Germany by letters five and six. Codes with other letters in that position belong to a bank abroad – a quick way to catch mistakes.

An 11-character code adds a branch code. For most transfers the head office code is fine.

Sending money to Germany for less

An international bank payment to Germany often costs more than you think. Besides a fixed fee, intermediary banks can deduct a charge and, if currencies are converted, the bank usually applies a less favourable rate than the actual market rate.

That exchange rate margin tends to be the biggest cost item, even though it is not listed as a fee. An easy check: put the offered rate against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

Money transfer services often use a rate near the mid-market rate. Before you send money to Germany, it is worth comparing the total cost via GoldexPay rather than accepting the first rate you see.

Banks in Germany beginning with the letter :letter

This list only shows banks in Germany beginning with :letter. The figures for Germany mentioned here apply to all 2804 banks and not only this letter.

Bank not listed? Its official name may begin with another word – think of the full legal name instead of the brand. Try the full list for Germany when you are not sure how the name is spelled.

Check the code before you pay

Ask the recipient to copy their bank details directly from their online banking. When the code you were given differs from the code listed here, do not guess – contact the recipient or their bank.

We gather SWIFT/BIC codes using publicly available data and update our list regularly. Institutions merge, change names and retire codes – a directory can be a step behind. Before any payment of any size, check the code with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is an independent comparison service for money transfers and not part of any bank listed here.

Fraudsters often use fake invoices carrying new bank details from what looks like a familiar address. Before paying, confirm changed details by phone on a number you know.

Most SWIFT codes in Germany: Deutsche Bank AG

Of all banks in Germany, Deutsche Bank AG has the most SWIFT codes. Its head office code is DEUTDE2HXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.

Many codes often reflects that the bank registers branches and departments separately. If not the recipient asks for a branch, DEUTDE2HXXX is fine for transfers to this bank.
