How the Bank of Taiwan SWIFT/BIC is built up
A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- BKTW Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- TW Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- TP Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
SWIFT/BIC code of Bank of Taiwan
Whether a recipient gives you BKTWTWTP or BKTWTWTPXXX, it is the identical address for Bank of Taiwan in Taiwan. A SWIFT code shows the banks handling a payment exactly which bank should receive the money, much like a postcode for banks. It comes up mainly for payments that cross a border and payments in foreign currencies.
Further down we go through the practical side: money coming in from abroad, paying someone in another country and how to check a SWIFT code before you hit send. Keep in mind that the BIC just identifies the bank, not the account: the account number or IBAN does that part.
Where our SWIFT data comes from
We collect SWIFT/BIC codes from public sources and check them regularly. Banks reorganise, close branches and retire codes – a directory can be a step behind. The figures on this page are based on our own data and not on information from Bank of Taiwan itself.
See the information on this page as a helpful check, and let the details from the recipient or Bank of Taiwan have the final say. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site for money transfers and not part of Bank of Taiwan. Spotted an error? Tell us via our contact form so we can correct it.
Changed bank details? Be careful
Criminals often send fake invoices containing new bank details sent from what looks like a familiar address. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether the request is genuine.
Before paying, confirm changed bank details through a phone call. Watch out for urgent requests, odd spelling or an email address that differs by one letter. If a payment has already gone to a fraudster, contact your bank immediately: the sooner they act, the better the chance of a recall.
People receiving money are targeted too: a classic trick is a buyer who pays too much and then sends a request to refund the difference. Do not act before the money is actually in your account.
Tracking a transfer to or from Bank of Taiwan
There is no fixed delivery time for every transfer: many land the same day or the next. Weekends and public holidays in either country can add extra days, since banks do not process on those days. Occasionally a bank asks about the purpose of a payment before releasing it.
A growing number of banks are connected to SWIFT gpi. Each gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR, which your bank can use to see where the money is. Save your transfer receipt until the money has arrived – you will need it for any trace request.
If a payment has not arrived after a few business days, the person who paid needs to contact their own bank. Ask the sender for a copy of the payment confirmation with the date and reference; that often settles the question quickly.
Paying someone abroad from your Bank of Taiwan account
The price of an international transfer has several parts – not just the fee on your screen. On top of a fixed fee, banks in between can take a cut, and when currencies are converted, the bank usually applies a rate below the actual market rate.
The real cost is often in the rate, rather than in the fee: the bank converts at a rate with a margin built in. A simple test: put the bank’s rate next to the mid-market rate for the same moment and work out the difference on your amount.
For a lot of currency pairs, a transfer service is less expensive than a traditional bank transfer. GoldexPay lists these services side by side so you can see what actually arrives before you commit. Using a transfer service does not require closing your account at Bank of Taiwan: you simply pay the service from your account.
What the XXX in BKTWTWTPXXX means
Every SWIFT/BIC code starts with an 8-character core: four letters for the bank, two letters for the country and two characters for the location. For Bank of Taiwan, the 8-character core is BKTWTWTP.
Most banks and apps work with either length. If yours asks for eleven characters, use BKTWTWTPXXX.
Do not add spaces or dashes when you type BKTWTWTP; the code is always written in one block. A single character may route a payment to another bank, so check it twice.
Head office or branch code at Bank of Taiwan?
Our database contains 166 SWIFT/BIC codes for Bank of Taiwan. Besides the head office code BKTWTWTPXXX, there are codes for branches, departments or specific services.
Usually there is no need to pick a branch: payments sent to BKTWTWTPXXX are routed within Bank of Taiwan without problems. Just use a branch code when the recipient explicitly asks for it, for example on a letter or invoice.
When in doubt, ask the person you are paying which code their bank gave them. Codes are sometimes changed or retired over time.
Receiving money from abroad at Bank of Taiwan
If you are waiting for money from abroad, give the sender a complete set of details. The basics are: the account holder’s name, IBAN or account number, BKTWTWTPXXX and often your home address.
Their bank may also ask for the address of your bank. A mistake in the IBAN can be more trouble than you might think; copy them from your banking app rather than typing.
Money from abroad does not always land for the full amount. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, Bank of Taiwan may charge for incoming payments, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate applies. For business payments, it is common to state how the fees are split, so that nobody is left short.
Is BKTWTWTP still correct? How to check
Have the recipient copy their account details directly from their banking app. Compare it with BKTWTWTP on this page.
Errors in the BIC tend to be annoying rather than fatal: often the payment comes back, minus fees. Do not forget the IBAN: an error there can be more difficult to undo than a wrong code.
A format check by your bank merely tells you that the code exists. Some banks now check the payee name against the account before you confirm – do not ignore a mismatch warning. For a first payment, many people start with a small test amount and wait for confirmation.
