The way the Capita PLC SWIFT/BIC is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

CAPT Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
GB Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
2L Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

What CAPTGB2L means for a payment to Capita PLC

The 8-character code CAPTGB2L and the 11-character code CAPTGB2LXXX refer to the same bank: Capita PLC. A SWIFT code shows the sending bank which institution is meant to get the money. In practice you usually see it on international invoices, in payment forms and on the account details of Capita PLC customers.

Further down we go through the practical side: money coming in from abroad, sending money abroad and how to check a SWIFT code before you hit send. The SWIFT code on its own cannot identify a personal account; that is what the IBAN or account number .

What a transfer from Capita PLC abroad really costs

What you pay for an international transfer has more than one component, and the transfer fee is only the most visible one. Besides the transfer fee, correspondent or intermediary banks can take a cut, and when currencies are converted, the bank usually uses a rate that is less favourable than the actual market rate.

That exchange rate margin tends to be the largest cost because it is hidden in the rate. Compare their rate with the mid-market rate – the rate you find on financial news sites.

For many currency pairs, a transfer service is cheaper than a traditional bank transfer – mostly thanks to the rate. On GoldexPay we compare what recipients receive with different services. You can always keep your account at Capita PLC to fund the transfer.

Tracking a transfer to or from Capita PLC

An international transfer typically takes one to a few business days, depending on the currency, the route and the banks involved. Bank holidays in the sending or receiving country add a day or more, since banks do not process on those days. Sometimes a bank wants to know about the purpose of a payment.

Many banks use SWIFT gpi for faster and traceable payments. Every gpi transfer gets a unique reference, the UETR that banks can use to trace it. Save the payment confirmation until the recipient confirms; it contains the details a bank needs to start a trace.

Only the sending bank is able to start an official trace – the recipient’s bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Request from the sender a copy of the payment confirmation; that often settles the question quickly.

Changed bank details? Be careful

One of the most common tricks goes like this: an email arrives with a request claiming that a contact now has a new bank account and that the next payment should go there. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about who owns the account: scammers use real codes of real banks.

Verify changed payment details through a separate channel, such as a phone number you already know, not by replying to the message. Pressure or requests to keep it quiet tend to be red flags. Already paid? Call the bank you paid from without delay and ask them to try to recall the payment; also report it to the police.

People receiving money are targeted too: a classic trick is an overpayment and then sends a request to send back the difference to another account. A payment confirmation from the sender proves nothing; only your own account shows what has arrived.

British Pound (GBP) and conversion costs

Most accounts at Capita PLC are typically held in GBP, the national currency of United Kingdom. Money sent in a different currency is converted into GBP before it reaches the account – and the bank that does it picks the rate. Each conversion eats into the amount – usually through the rate rather than a fee.

Who converts the money matters. Sending the amount directly in GBP usually avoids a second conversion.

Rates for GBP move during the day – some services let you fix a rate in advance. With bigger transfers, a small gap in the rate adds up quickly.

Why Capita PLC has an 8- and an 11-character code

The layout of a BIC is always the same: four characters for the institution, a two-letter country code and a two-character location code, sometimes followed by a branch code. In this case, the 8-character core is CAPTGB2L.

The long version adds a three-character extension that identify a branch or department. If the last three are XXX, the code points to the head office, which is why CAPTGB2LXXX and CAPTGB2L lead to the same place.

Do not add spaces or dashes when you type CAPTGB2L. Copying the code beats typing it by hand, because one wrong letter changes the bank.

Paying Capita PLC in euros within SEPA

Because United Kingdom is part of the SEPA zone, a euro transfer into Capita PLC from within the SEPA area normally only needs an IBAN. Most banking apps do not require the BIC in that case.

You still need CAPTGB2LXXX when sending non-euro payments or money from outside the SEPA area. A few forms also show a field for the BIC; in that case, fill in CAPTGB2L.

Instant payments in euros are increasingly available within SEPA. As long as no currency is converted, a SEPA transfer is inexpensive; it is the conversion that costs money.

Is CAPTGB2L still correct? How to check

Ask the recipient to copy their account details directly from their banking app. If the code you have does not match CAPTGB2L or CAPTGB2LXXX, stop and ask: check with the recipient or with Capita PLC directly.

A wrong SWIFT code may lead to delays, a payment being sent back or additional charges along the way. Do not forget the IBAN: a mistake there is more difficult to undo than a wrong BIC.

Many banking apps check the structure of IBANs, but that does not prove the account belongs to the right person. If your bank offers it, a payee name check before sending adds extra certainty. A small test payment is a sensible step for a large first payment.

What to give a sender who pays you at Capita PLC

If you are waiting for a payment from another country, give the sender a complete set of details. Give them your name as the bank knows it, the IBAN or account number, the BIC CAPTGB2LXXX and your address, which some banks require.

It helps to add the bank name and London as well, since some forms ask for it. Double-check the details before you send them, because the sender’s bank usually copies them as is.

Expect that the amount credited is below the amount on the sender’s receipt. Correspondent banks can take a fee, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate applies. Agree with the sender who covers the fees before the money is sent.
