Bitstamp vs Gate: a side-by-side cost check
Deciding between Bitstamp and Gate is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much of your money arrives once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. That is the gap we measure here.
On our site, Bitstamp sits in the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Gate is filed under crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain how we work out the cost, what each one is good at and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, the outcome can shift during the day.
Same category, different details
Bitstamp and Gate are both in our crypto exchange category, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.
Start with coverage: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Bitstamp handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Gate handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
Where the real cost hides
“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Also look beyond the conversion: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
How the numbers are worked out
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
Can you use Bitstamp and Gate together?
Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
Does the amount matter?
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With Bitstamp or Gate, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.
Safety checks before you sign up
Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
The right choice depends on what you do
When you travel, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
Our verdict
Across 4 of the 4 scenarios we can test on both sides, Gate left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Gate the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out Bitstamp. Check the table above to see where Bitstamp comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, Bitstamp is simply the cheaper option for you.
Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Bitstamp, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Comparing two crypto exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Moving money in and out also costs something. How you fund your account, by bank transfer, card or another method, changes the cost. Withdrawal fees on coins vary a lot, so check the asset you plan to move.
Custody is the last point. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.
Speed: Bitstamp vs Gate
Bitstamp lists its quickest option as Instant, while Gate lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Convenience counts too: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.
