Coinbase or Gate
Picking Coinbase or Gate is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. This page puts a number on that.
On our site, Coinbase falls into the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Gate belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain our method, where each provider tends to do well and who should pick which. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.
The short answer: Gate comes out cheaper
Across 4 of the 4 scenarios that Coinbase and Gate both support, Gate delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. On price alone, that makes Gate the default pick.
This does not rule out Coinbase. The scenario table above shows the routes where Coinbase does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Coinbase. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Coinbase vs Gate as crypto exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. First the spread: the difference between buy and sell price on a simple purchase. If you use the order book, maker and taker fees replace the spread as the main cost.
Moving money in and out also costs something. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.
And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Coinbase and Gate may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
How fast the money arrives
Fastest delivery: Instant at Coinbase and Instant at Gate. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Convenience counts too: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Which one suits you?
For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
Can you use Coinbase and Gate together?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. It is perfectly normal to keep Coinbase for one task and Gate for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Same category, different details
Coinbase and Gate are both in our crypto exchange category, so they compete for the same customers. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. Coinbase covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Gate covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
How we calculate the cost
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
This comparison is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
