Bitvavo vs Coinmerce: which one leaves you with more
Picking Bitvavo or Coinmerce is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our database, Bitvavo belongs to the crypto exchange group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Coinmerce belongs to crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about which jobs each one is built for.
Further down this page we explain our method, what each one is good at, and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so today’s result is not set in stone.
Why not use both?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Before every larger transfer, check the calculator on this page, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It takes a minute and can save real money.
Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
Bitvavo or Coinmerce: which fits your situation?
When you travel, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. Nothing here is investment advice.
The short answer: Bitvavo comes out cheaper
In 3 of 3 conversions that both providers offer, Bitvavo left you with more money after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Bitvavo.
Still, Coinmerce is not out of the race. Check the table above to see which conversions Coinmerce still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Coinmerce, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Does the amount matter?
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Delivery time and ease of use
Fastest delivery: Instant at Bitvavo and Instant at Coinmerce. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
Speed often depends on how you pay. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.
How the numbers are worked out
The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The numbers decide, not the commission.
The fee is only half the story
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Also look beyond the conversion: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
What to compare between two exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. If you use the order book, maker and taker fees replace the spread as the main cost.
Deposits and withdrawals deserve a separate look. A bank transfer is usually the cheapest way to fund an account; a card is faster but pricier. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.
And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Whether you keep coins on Bitvavo, on Coinmerce or in your own wallet, factor that choice into the cost.
Like for like: Bitvavo and Coinmerce
Both Bitvavo and Coinmerce sit in the crypto exchange category, so they compete for the same customers. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.
Check the basics: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. Bitvavo covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Coinmerce covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.
After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
