Coinbase vs Coinmerce

Deciding between Coinbase and Coinmerce is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are added up. This page puts a number on that.

In our comparison, Coinbase falls into the crypto exchange category and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Coinmerce is filed under crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says something about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator you can read how we work out the cost, where each provider tends to do well, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.

Our method

Every provider earns money in two ways: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Using both, or switching

Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.

When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.

The right choice depends on what you do

For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.

Our verdict

Across 3 of the 3 comparisons that Coinbase and Coinmerce both support, Coinbase left you with more money after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Coinbase.

Still, Coinmerce is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows which conversions Coinmerce still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Coinmerce, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

Is your money safe?

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Coinbase vs Coinmerce as crypto exchanges

Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. Advanced trading usually works with maker and taker fees, and a limit order that waits in the book often costs less than buying at market.

Moving money in and out also costs something. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.

And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Speed: Coinbase vs Coinmerce

Fastest delivery: Instant at Coinbase and Instant at Coinmerce. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Where the real cost hides

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.

So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Same category, different details

Coinbase and Coinmerce are both in our crypto exchange category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Coinbase handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Coinmerce handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
