Coinbase or Crypto.com: the real cost compared

Picking Coinbase or Crypto.com is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much of your money arrives once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.

In our database, Coinbase belongs to the crypto exchange category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Crypto.com sits in crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.

Further down this page we explain how we work out the cost, what each one is good at, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

How the numbers are worked out

The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

Verdict

For 4 out of 4 conversions that both providers offer, Crypto.com came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes Crypto.com the default pick.

Still, Coinbase is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows which conversions Coinbase still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Coinbase, which saves a sign-up. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

Like for like: Coinbase and Crypto.com

Coinbase and Crypto.com belong to the same category, crypto exchange, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. Coinbase covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Crypto.com covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, together with practical things like limits and support. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Does the amount matter?

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. With Coinbase or Crypto.com, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Can you use Coinbase and Crypto.com together?

You do not have to pick just one. It is perfectly normal to keep Coinbase for one task and Crypto.com for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.

Where the real cost hides

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Coinbase and Crypto.com may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

How fast the money arrives

Coinbase lists its quickest option as Instant, while Crypto.com lists Instant. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Regulation and safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

What to compare between two exchanges

With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.

Then there are deposit and withdrawal costs. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.

Finally, think about custody. Leaving assets on a platform means trusting it to keep them safe. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.

The right choice depends on what you do

For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
