The BRL/CAD exchange rate explained
This overview tracks the exchange rate between Brazilian Real (BRL) and Canadian Dollar (CAD) and sets it next to what real providers charge to convert one into the other. As of October 31, 2026, 1 BRL equals 0.257050 CAD, while 1 CAD comes to 3.8903 BRL.
That headline number is the mid-market rate. It is calculated as the middle of the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. Treat it as a fair reference point: it contains no profit margin and no fees, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
What you actually receive comes down to two separate costs: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and the visible transfer or service fee. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, show how they add up on a real amount and list practical steps to keep more of your money when you change BRL into CAD.
How GoldexPay compares BRL to CAD providers
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, to calculate what actually arrives in CAD. In total 8 providers are included, placed side by side.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, since markets keep moving.
We are not owned by any provider. Some links on this page are affiliate links. That never changes the ranking: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
The majority of services will not give you the mid-market rate itself. Instead they shift the rate in their own favour and earn on the difference. People call this the spread. With a 2% markup, for instance, for every 100 BRL you convert, about 2 BRL worth disappears before the money arrives.
Besides the hidden margin, a lot of services add a visible fee. That can be a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, so the recipient gets less than you expected.
Be wary of services that advertise free transfers. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The reliable test is how much CAD the recipient ends up with for exactly the same sum, which is how the table above is sorted.
Sending a larger amount from BRL to CAD
Check the provider’s licence first. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.
Check names and account details twice. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
Getting the most CAD for your BRL
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive if the rate is poor. The number that matters is how much CAD arrives for your BRL, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.
At foreign tills and cash machines, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Finally, look at how you pay. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Bundling smaller transfers reduces what you pay in flat fees.
How BRL to CAD transfers travel
Your regular bank usually sends the money through SWIFT. Your transfer may hop between several banks before it arrives, and each can take a fee. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, with the full cost not always known upfront.
Many money transfer apps use a different model. They keep money in accounts in both regions, so your BRL stays in the BRL system and the recipient is paid in CAD from a local account. This usually cuts both time and cost, with the final CAD amount fixed upfront.
Speed is not down to the provider alone: funding method, verification and holidays in the sending and receiving country. New customers sometimes wait a little longer as the provider completes its checks. Upload your documents early if timing is tight.
Where Brazilian Real and Canadian Dollar are used
Brazilian Real is the legal tender in Brazil. Canadian Dollar is the official currency of Canada. This matters if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.
There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert BRL to CAD: rent or a mortgage abroad, tuition fees, a salary paid in another currency, savings or a holiday. What suits one case may not suit another: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, while regular small amounts are more sensitive to fixed fees.
Each country has its own payment habits. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet, and in some places mobile wallets or cash collection are widely used. Check which details the provider needs before you start.
How BRL/CAD moved over the past year
Across the last year, the exchange rate has changed by -1.42%. In that period the highest level was 0.286458 CAD for one BRL, and the lowest was 0.245220. At 0.257050, the rate today sits somewhere inside that range.
The distance between the high and the low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. On a large conversion, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, occasionally more than the difference between providers.
Exchange rates respond to interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
Sample calculation for 5,000.00 BRL
Let’s use a transfer of 5,000.00 BRL. Converted at the pure mid-market rate (0.257050), you can work out the upper limit of what any provider could deliver in CAD. No service pays out that exact figure, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.
Across the 8 providers in our comparison, Wise delivered the most: the recipient gets 1,278.84 CAD at the time of our last update. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.
Bear in mind that the cheapest provider for 5,000.00 BRL is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, while a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Try your actual amount in the calculator above and check whether the order changes.
