The BRL/JPY exchange rate explained
The page you are reading tracks the rate for Brazilian Real (BRL) and Japanese Yen (JPY) and sets it next to the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. As of October 31, 2026, one BRL is worth 28.9676 JPY, while one JPY is worth 0.034521 BRL.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is the midpoint between the price at which large banks buy BRL and the price at which they sell it. Treat it as a fair reference point: no fee or margin is built in, which is exactly why you rarely get it as a private customer.
What ends up on the JPY side depends on two things: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Further down we show how those costs are built up, put them side by side and give concrete ways to keep more of your money when you change BRL into JPY.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Most providers will not give you the rate of 28.9676 itself. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. This is known as the exchange rate margin. A markup of 2%, for example, means that for every 100 BRL you convert, about 2 BRL worth disappears before the money arrives.
Besides the hidden margin, many providers charge an explicit fee. That can be a flat charge per payment, a percentage of the amount or a mix of both. On classic bank transfers abroad extra deductions can follow, and those only show up at the end.
Look twice at anything sold as commission-free. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The only fair way to compare is the total amount that arrives in JPY for the same amount of BRL, and that is the figure our table ranks on.
The BRL/JPY rate over twelve months
Compared with a year ago, the price of BRL in JPY moved by +1.09%. During that year the top of the range was 32.2328 JPY per BRL, while the bottom of the range was 27.9253. The current 28.9676 is easy to place within that band.
The distance between the high and the low shows how much the rate can move in practice. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, sometimes more than the choice of provider.
The rate reflects interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.
Why we compare total cost
We start from the live mid-market rate for BRL/JPY. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, and work out how much JPY the recipient would end up with. The comparison covers 8 providers, placed side by side.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 31, 2026. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, since markets keep moving, especially when markets are busy.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which help pay for the site. That never changes the ranking: providers are sorted purely by how much JPY the recipient gets.
How BRL to JPY transfers travel
Your regular bank usually sends the money via the SWIFT system. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, each of which can deduct a charge. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, and the exact cost is not always clear in advance.
Dedicated providers take another route. They keep money in accounts in both regions, so no money physically crosses the border: you pay in locally and the recipient is paid out locally. That is often faster and cheaper, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.
Delivery time depends on several factors: how you pay, the time of day, cut-off times and bank holidays in both countries. The very first payment may be slower because the provider has to verify your identity. Get verified before you need to send when a deadline is involved.
Where you pay with BRL and JPY
Brazilian Real is used in Brazil. Japanese Yen is used in Japan. This matters for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.
People convert BRL to JPY for many reasons: paying suppliers, supporting relatives, buying property or simply travelling. Not every situation needs the same solution: a single big transfer benefits most from a sharp rate, whereas frequent smaller payments are more sensitive to fixed fees.
The way money is paid out also differs per country. Account formats differ: IBAN in one place, account and routing numbers in another, and in some places mobile wallets or cash collection are widely used. Check which details the provider needs before you start.
Tips for converting BRL to JPY
Look at the final amount, not just the fee. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive because the margin can make up the difference. The number that matters is the JPY amount after every cost, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.
At foreign tills and cash machines, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. This is called dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It saves you from checking the rate every day, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Finally, look at how you pay. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Sending less often but in larger amounts means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Only use providers that are regulated. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign. Verify through a channel you trust.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, like a statement or a sales contract. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Example: converting 5,000.00 BRL
Let’s use a transfer of 5,000.00 BRL. Converted at the pure mid-market rate (28.9676), you can work out the upper limit of what is possible on the JPY side. No service pays out that exact figure, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.
Looking at all 8 providers we track, Wise delivered the most: the recipient gets 144,115.61 JPY at the time of our last update. The gap between 144,115.61 JPY and the theoretical maximum is what the conversion actually cost you.
Keep in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Enter your own amount in the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.
