Who sends money from the US to Japan, and why?

If you're looking to convert USD to JPY, you probably have a practical need. Maybe you're heading from Chicago to Tokyo for a couple of weeks and want to get your spending money sorted early. Or it could be your company is handling payments to a translator in Osaka, or wiring funds to a parts supplier in Aichi. Someone working in Japan but earning in dollars will need yen each month just to cover basic living costs.

There are also those who repatriate investment proceeds, like a Japanese resident selling US stocks and bringing the money home. The sums involved can be anything from a few hundred dollars up to larger payments such as tuition fees or for a property. Whatever your reason, you’ll want to know exactly how many yen your recipient actually gets after any conversion, compared to the true market rate. At the moment, the mid-market rate is 157.3000, so if you were starting with 1000 dollars, that's 157,300.02 JPY yen before charges; 5000 dollars would be 786,500.11 JPY.

Why the dollar and yen move up and down

Both the US dollar and Japanese yen trade on open markets, influenced directly by their respective central banks. The Federal Reserve sets policy for the US, and the Bank of Japan does so for Japan. The interest rate gap between them is often the main factor in where this pair trades. Japan has long kept rates very low, making the yen a preferred currency for borrowing and moving funds into higher-yielding investments elsewhere. If investors decide to unwind those trades, the yen can strengthen swiftly.

The yen is also known as a safe-haven currency. When international markets get jittery, people often buy yen, partly because Japan holds substantial overseas assets. The Ministry of Finance in Japan sometimes intervenes to smooth large swings in the currency, so market watchers pay close attention to any official remarks.

This year so far, USD/JPY has shifted by +1.89%, fluctuating between 152.6275 and 163.8488. The impact becomes very clear on large payments: shifting exchange rates can mean a difference of several thousand yen on bigger transfers.

How to get yen delivered to a Japanese account

Yen payments within Japan are settled over the Zengin system. Most providers convert your dollars first, and then use Zengin to send funds inside the country. Some international wires take a different route, moving along the SWIFT network straight to a Japanese bank. For either method, you'll need to collect some key details from your recipient: the bank's name, branch code or branch name, account type (most often called an "ordinary" account), and the account number.

Japanese banks match beneficiary names very closely with their internal records, often stored in katakana. Even a small spelling mismatch can slow down your transfer or cause it to bounce. If your recipient banks with Japan Post Bank, they may provide a special symbol and number instead of the usual branch and account number. They can look up and supply the correct equivalents if needed. For more practical guidance, see our article on which bank details an international payment needs.

Understanding costs and making a fair comparison

The fee charged by banks often isn't what it seems; very often it's baked into the currency rate itself. So you may see "no fee", but get fewer yen than the mid-market rate would lead you to expect. We published a guide on how banks mark up exchange rates, it's helpful if you want to check the true cost. A simple way to compare is to look at the yen your recipient actually receives, not just the fee or the displayed rate.

At this moment, for a 1000 dollar transfer, Wise is the least expensive provider in our comparison and pays 156,521.39 JPY yen. With Wise, you'll see 156,521.39 JPY yen arrive after a fee of 4.95 USD, so the total cost is 0.50% including any markup above the base rate. If you already use Revolut, the cost for the same transfer would be 0.50%. You can read about how these calculations work on our How we compare page.

Since yen aren't divided into smaller units for most daily use, all amounts are rounded to the nearest whole yen on payout.

Transfer timing, time zone effects and sending larger sums

Japan runs 13 or 14 hours ahead of New York, and doesn't observe daylight saving time. If you start a transfer from the US on Tuesday evening, for example, Japan is already into Wednesday morning. When your payment shows up depends on the provider's cut-off and how quickly the Japanese bank processes incoming funds. To see why a Friday night transfer might get there days later, check our article on value dates and cut-off times.

Larger transfers, such as tuition payments or buying property, raise the stakes on getting a good exchange rate. A seemingly minor difference, like a one percent cost, quickly adds up when you're dealing with big amounts, often outweighing any fixed fee. If you're aiming for a better rate, you might use a limit order to set your target and wait. Expect both sending and receiving banks to ask questions about where your money comes from, and what the payment is meant for.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1000 USD in yen?

Converted at the mid-market rate, 1000 US dollars comes out to 157,300.02 JPY yen. What actually arrives depends on your choice of provider; at this moment, 156,521.39 JPY yen is the top payout in our comparison. The difference between those two numbers is what the transfer really costs you.

What is the cheapest way to convert dollars to yen?

For a 1000 dollar transfer right now, Wise sits at the top of our comparison for cheapest provider. Keep in mind, though, the cheapest option can shift depending on your amount. Banks tend to cost more than transfer specialists since they include a markup in the rate.

Is it better to exchange dollars before I travel to Japan or after I arrive?

If you have a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, you'll often get more yen by withdrawing from an ATM once you're in Japan than by buying yen before you leave. Convenience store and post office ATMs in Japan usually take foreign cards. While cards are widely accepted in cities, cash remains common, so it's a good idea to have some yen on hand.

Why does the dollar to yen rate move so much?

Most of the movement comes from shifts in US and Japanese interest rates, along with how confident or cautious global investors are feeling. When the gap between rates narrows or risk appetite swings, the yen can strengthen abruptly. Official statements from the central banks can also send the rate moving within minutes.

Will I get the rate I see on Google or in a chart?

No, the rate shown in charts is the mid-market rate, which no transfer provider matches for customers. Transfer services add costs, sometimes as a visible fee, sometimes as a markup, often both. You should always check our payout amounts, since they reflect what you or your recipient will actually receive after all charges.
