Japanese Yen to Chinese Yuan explained

The page you are reading tracks the rate for Japanese Yen (JPY) and Chinese Yuan (CNY), together with the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. On October 30, 2026, one JPY is worth 0.042310 CNY, while 1 CNY equals 23.6352 JPY.

That headline number is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is calculated as the middle of what wholesale traders pay for JPY and what they ask for it. It works as a fair reference point: no fee or margin is built in, so consumers almost never receive it in full.

What ends up on the CNY side depends on two separate costs: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the visible transfer or service fee. In the sections below we explain how those costs work, look at what a conversion costs in practice and give concrete ways to get closer to the mid-market rate when you change JPY into CNY.

How our JPY/CNY comparison works

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, to calculate what actually arrives in CNY. We do this for 9 providers, placed side by side.

Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 30, 2026. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, because their rate can move between our updates, especially when markets are busy.

GoldexPay is independent. Some links on this page are affiliate links. The order is never affected by them: the provider that delivers the most CNY comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.

What banks and apps really charge for JPY to CNY

Most providers do not convert at the mid-market rate itself. Instead they shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. People call this the spread. If the margin is 2%, then about 2 out of every 100 JPY never reach the recipient.

On top of the margin, most banks ask for a separate fee. That can be a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, so the recipient gets less than you expected.

Take a close look at anything sold as commission-free. The cost often sits in the rate instead. The reliable test is the final CNY figure for exactly the same sum, which is how the table above is sorted.

Choosing a route to send CNY

With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment via the SWIFT system. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, each of which can deduct a charge. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, and the final deduction is often only visible afterwards.

Many money transfer apps use a different model. They keep money in accounts in both regions, which means your payment and the payout both happen domestically. That is often faster and cheaper, with the final CNY amount fixed upfront.

Speed is not down to the provider alone: how you pay, the time of day, cut-off times and bank holidays in both countries. A first transfer can take longer as the provider completes its checks. Upload your documents early if timing is tight.

The countries behind JPY and CNY

Japanese Yen is the money you pay with in Japan. Chinese Yuan is used in China. That is useful to know if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.

People convert JPY to CNY for many reasons: rent or a mortgage abroad, tuition fees, a salary paid in another currency, savings or a holiday. What suits one case may not suit another: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, while frequent smaller payments are more sensitive to fixed fees.

Each country has its own payment habits. Account formats differ: IBAN in one place, account and routing numbers in another and in certain countries payout to a mobile wallet is the norm. Check which details the provider needs before you start.

Recent movement in the JPY/CNY rate

Compared with a year ago, the JPY/CNY rate moved by -8.16%. In that period the top of the range was 0.046512 CNY per JPY, and the bottom of the range was 0.041313. Today’s rate of 0.042310 sits somewhere inside that range.

The distance between the high and the low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. On a large conversion, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.

Exchange rates respond to interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you are waiting for a particular level, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.

Sending a larger amount from JPY to CNY

Check the provider’s licence first. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.

Check names and account details twice. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.

Big sums usually trigger extra verification. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

A worked example with 200,000.00 JPY

Consider an amount of 200,000.00 JPY. At the mid-market rate of 0.042310, that marks the theoretical maximum of what is possible on the CNY side. In practice nobody hands over that full amount, because margins and fees come off first.

Across the 9 providers in our comparison, Wise delivered the most, with 8,420.87 CNY in the end. The gap between 8,420.87 CNY and the theoretical maximum shows the true cost, fees and margin combined.

Note that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, whereas a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Try your actual amount in the calculator above for a ranking that fits your situation.

How to get a better JPY to CNY rate

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little because the margin can make up the difference. What you want to know is the CNY amount after every cost, and that already includes both margin and fee.

If you pay or withdraw cash in a CNY country, you can get a choice between your own currency and the local one. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Choose the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.

Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. If you are not in a hurry, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. That avoids guessing, but the target may never be reached.

Finally, look at how you pay. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Sending less often but in larger amounts reduces what you pay in flat fees.
