Converting Bitcoin into Gold: what you are looking at
This overview follows the exchange rate between Bitcoin (BTC) and Gold (XAU) and compares it with what real providers charge to convert one into the other. On October 30, 2026, 1 BTC buys 19.7001 XAU, while one XAU is worth 0.050761 BTC.
The rate shown above is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between the price at which large banks buy BTC and the price at which they sell it. Think of it as a neutral benchmark: no fee or margin is built in, so few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
What you actually receive is shaped by two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and any fixed or percentage fee. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, put them side by side and give concrete ways to lose less on the exchange when you swap Bitcoin for Gold.
Buying or selling crypto: BTC to XAU
Crypto prices differ from platform to platform. On an exchange with an order book, you deal with a spread between the highest bid and the lowest ask, plus a trading fee. Easy buy buttons in apps usually quote a single price with the margin already included.
Withdrawing crypto from a platform, a network fee applies. It is often a fixed amount regardless of the size of the transfer, so it weighs more on small transactions. Make sure the sending and receiving side use the same network: coins sent over the wrong network can be lost.
Volatility is much higher than with regular currencies. A quote is often only valid for a short moment, and big orders can fill at a worse price than shown. Use the rate here as a guide, not as a binding quote.
Also decide who holds the keys. Coins kept on an exchange are held by that exchange, while a personal wallet puts the responsibility, and the risk of losing access, on you. Use platforms that are registered with the regulator in your country.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Most providers stay away from the mid-market rate itself. They shift the rate in their own favour and keep the difference. People call this the spread. If the margin is 2%, then about 2 out of every 100 BTC never reach the recipient.
On top of the margin, a lot of services add a visible fee. It may be a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments extra deductions can follow, so the recipient gets less than you expected.
Be wary of anything sold as commission-free. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The reliable test is the total amount that arrives in XAU for the same amount of BTC, which is how the table above is sorted.
How we rank providers for BTC to XAU
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, which gives the amount the recipient receives. We do this for 0 providers, so you can see the differences at a glance.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 30, 2026. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, and it can differ slightly from our calculation, especially when markets are busy.
We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links, which help pay for the site. They have no influence on the order: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Troy ounces, spot price and premiums
Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams. The codes XAU, XAG, XPT and XPD stand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, so the metal behaves like one side of a currency pair. The figure above refers to one troy ounce.
What you see is the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, because of manufacturing and dealer costs. The buyback price is normally lower than spot.
Ownership comes in more than one shape. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. Professional storage charges an annual fee but keeps the metal in your name. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Tax rules also differ. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.
Sending a larger amount from BTC to XAU
Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Verify every detail of the recipient. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
Big sums usually trigger extra verification. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Tips for converting BTC to XAU
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive because the margin can make up the difference. The fairest figure to compare is how much XAU arrives for your BTC, and that already includes both margin and fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a XAU country, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Always opt to pay in the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Timing plays a role too. At weekends, with the wholesale market shut, some services add an extra buffer to the rate. If you are not in a hurry, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers reduces what you pay in flat fees.
Bitcoin against Gold: the last twelve months
Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate moved by +41.16%. During that year the highest level was 20.9253 XAU for one BTC, and the low point came in at 12.3289. At 19.7001, the rate today sits somewhere inside that range.
The distance between the high and the low shows how much the rate can move in practice. On a large conversion, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, sometimes more than the choice of provider.
The rate reflects central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If timing matters to you, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
