Converting Gold into Bitcoin explained

This page tracks the rate for Gold (XAU) and Bitcoin (BTC) and sets it next to what real providers charge to convert one into the other. On October 31, 2026, 1 XAU buys 0.050409 BTC, while a single BTC is worth 19.8379 XAU.

The rate shown above is the mid-market rate. It is the midpoint between the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. It works as a fair reference point: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.

What you actually receive depends on two separate costs: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Below the converter and chart we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and share simple habits to lose less on the exchange when you swap Gold for Bitcoin.

Troy ounces, spot price and premiums

Gold and silver prices are expressed per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams. XAU is the code for gold, XAG for silver, XPT for platinum and XPD for palladium, so the metal behaves like one side of a currency pair. The rate shown is the price of one troy ounce.

The rate is based on the spot price: the market price for big bars traded between dealers. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, covering minting, handling and the dealer’s margin. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.

You can own precious metals in several forms. Keeping coins or bars yourself means arranging storage and insurance. Vault storage through a dealer costs a yearly fee, with the metal registered to you. Paper products track the price but do not always give you physical metal.

Tax rules also differ. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.

Tips for converting XAU to BTC

Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive because the margin can make up the difference. What you want to know is how much BTC arrives for your XAU, which combines margin and fee.

At foreign tills and cash machines, you may be asked whether to pay in XAU or in the local currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.

Timing can also matter. At weekends, with the wholesale market shut, some services add an extra buffer to the rate. If you are not in a hurry, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once XAU/BTC reaches a level you choose. It saves you from checking the rate every day, though there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

The payment method matters as well. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer also cuts the impact of fixed fees.

The XAU/BTC rate over twelve months

Across the last year, the exchange rate shows a change of -29.65%. During that year the top of the range was 0.081110 BTC for one XAU, while the low point came in at 0.047789. The current 0.050409 is easy to place within that band.

The spread between the year’s extremes is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, sometimes more than the choice of provider.

Exchange rates respond to interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.

Why we compare total cost

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much BTC the recipient would end up with. In total 0 providers are included, ranked from most to least received.

The figures refresh every half hour, so the page reflects the market of October 31, 2026. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, because their rate can move between our updates, especially when markets are busy.

We are not owned by any provider. Some of the links are affiliate links, which help pay for the site. They have no influence on the order: the provider that delivers the most BTC comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.

Exchange rate markup and fees on XAU/BTC

Nearly every bank and app stay away from the rate of 0.050409 as such. They shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. That gap is called the markup. If the margin is 2%, then you lose roughly 2 XAU on every 100 XAU, without it ever appearing as a fee.

On top of the margin, a lot of services ask for a separate fee. That can be a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. On classic bank transfers abroad the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, and those only show up at the end.

Be wary of offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". The cost often sits in the rate instead. The reliable test is how much BTC the recipient ends up with for an identical XAU amount, and that is the figure our table ranks on.

Before you send: security and large amounts

Make sure the provider is licensed. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.

Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.

Big sums usually trigger extra verification. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

Converting XAU to BTC as a crypto pair

With crypto, the price you pay depends heavily on where you trade. On a trading platform, you pay the difference between bid and ask, and a commission per trade. Simple broker apps often show one price with the margin already included.

When you move crypto to or from your own wallet, a network fee applies. It is unrelated to how much you move, so for small amounts it can be a large share. Make sure the sending and receiving side use the same network: mistakes here are rarely reversible.

Crypto prices can move sharply within minutes. A quote is often only valid for a short moment, and big orders can fill at a worse price than shown. Treat the figure above as an indication.

Custody is another point to consider. Coins kept on an exchange are held by that exchange, while self-custody means you alone can access, or lose, the funds. Use platforms that are registered with the regulator in your country.
