Why you might send pounds to Norway
Connections between the UK and Norway stretch across the North Sea in both business and daily life. Aberdeen sees a stream of oil and gas professionals working with Norwegian firms, and cross-border salaries, bonuses and payments aren’t rare. An engineer from Newcastle may take on a contract in Stavanger for a few months, while international students and seafood buyers end up asking the same question: how much does moving GBP to NOK actually cost me?
Private sends are frequent too. Norwegians living in Britain often support family or keep a property in Norway, and British owners of a hytte, the classic Norwegian holiday cabin, need to pay local bills in kroner. At the current mid-market, if you send 1000 pounds, it’s 12,360.27 NOK. If you need to swap kroner back to pounds, take a look at the NOK → GBP page for those details.

The krone, oil and how Norges Bank operates
Norway's not an EU member, but it is part of the European Economic Area, and the euro was never adopted. Norges Bank (the central bank) has set inflation targets with a free-floating krone since 2001. The Bank of England acts much the same for the pound, so neither is managed by pegging or heavy intervention.
But what really moves the krone is oil. Norway exports a great deal of petroleum, so the krone often shifts with oil prices and with wider appetite for risk, rising with strong energy markets and dipping if investors are uneasy. It's a relatively small currency like the Swedish krona, so swings against GBP can be sharp and fast. Over the last year, the GBP/NOK rate shifted by -6.73%, with a low at 12.3505 and a high of 13.6719. If you’re sending money from your UK salary to pay bills in Norway, watch the range carefully; timing your transfer can make a real difference.
Putting kroner into a Norwegian bank account
Norwegian IBANs are easy to recognize, they start with NO and have just 15 characters, one of the shortest types in Europe. The local account number is 11 digits; banks in Norway usually accept either format for incoming payments. Day to day, Norwegians move money via Vipps, a domestic payments app, but cross-border funds coming from the UK need to reach a bank account directly.
There’s a point that catches some people out. Norway is part of the SEPA zone for euro transfers, but when you send kroner, SEPA rules don’t benefit you. The outcome depends on how your provider pays out locally, or which correspondent banks your UK bank uses if you send through them. If you’re invoicing a client in Norway, take care with your choice of currency up front; our guide to invoicing in a foreign currency weighs the pros and cons for you.
How pound-to-krone providers compare
The provider at the top of our table right now pays out 12,300.50 NOK when you send 1000 pounds. At 2000 pounds, Wise currently sits in the lead. GBP/NOK is a less-traded pair than GBP/EUR, so you’ll often notice a bigger span between the best and worst rates, even for smaller amounts.
For context, you can measure all options against Xe, which charges 0.90% in total cost on 1000 pounds, or OFX, with a cost of 0.70%. UK banks are usually pricier, as their margin is buried inside the exchange rate rather than charged as a fee. The payout in kroner at the end is what matters most (that’s what we rank by). Details on our method are found here: How we compare.
Timing, holidays and larger payments in Norway
Norway is on Central European Time, so an hour ahead of the UK, but bank holidays affect transfers more than the clock. Norwegian banks close for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and the entire Easter week sees very little movement. Constitution Day on 17 May shuts down nearly all banking. If you initiate a payment the day before one of these dates, expect it to complete just after the break.
For those who convert pounds to kroner regularly, offshore workers, for instance, there are a few strategies. Some divide transfers across a couple of dates or ask their provider to monitor for a target rate; this doesn't promise a better outcome but can avoid putting the whole amount on a single day's rate. When you transfer a large sum, such as a property deposit, the bank may ask you to document the origin of funds. See how AML checks on transfers work and what to prepare. Frequently asked questions
What is the GBP to NOK exchange rate today?

What is the cheapest way to send pounds to Norway?
At the moment, Wise offers the lowest total cost for 1000 pounds. It’s always worth checking the table for your exact amount, though, as rankings can change depending on how much you send.
Is the Norwegian krone linked to oil prices?
To an extent, yes. Norway's economy draws significant revenue from exporting oil, so you’ll notice the krone often rises or falls with crude prices. Policy rates and shifts in risk sentiment also matter. The link isn’t rigid, but the pattern is clear.
Can I send euros to a Norwegian account instead?
You can send euros, but the Norwegian bank will switch them to kroner at their internal rate, and that rate often isn’t favorable. If you want the recipient to get more kroner, it's usually better to convert pounds through a specialist before the funds arrive in Norway.
