Who sends pounds to China
You might be moving GBP to CNY for any number of reasons. For instance, a furniture shop in Manchester could be wiring a deposit to a supplier in Guangzhou before anything even leaves China. Or maybe you work in Shanghai yet still pay the mortgage on your house back in the UK, so you’re shuttling money both ways at times, perhaps sending home yuan savings or covering sterling bills. Students often transfer funds out, too, once their UK studies end and it’s time to close their accounts.
When you’re comparing quotes, the true mid-market rate shows 8,916.70 CNY for every 1000 pounds. If you’re sending 5000, that’s 44,583.48 CNY. Use those as guideposts. And if you’re thinking about switching yuan to pounds instead, just check the latest details over at the CNY → GBP page.

A floating pound meets a managed yuan
GBP, overseen by the Bank of England, trades in open markets and shifts around freely. The yuan behaves differently. The People’s Bank of China announces a reference rate every morning, and CNY only fluctuates within certain limits, so its path is carefully managed. You’ll also encounter CNH, an offshore yuan. If you’re sending to someone in China, onshore CNY is almost always used, but don't be surprised if offshore prices vary a little at times.
Pound-yuan is a cross rate, what happens to GBP against the dollar matters here, and so does the yuan’s position against USD. While the PBOC keeps a steady hand on CNY, the pound’s larger spikes usually track with central bank moves, political headlines or inflation surprises back home. In the past twelve months, GBP/CNY ranged from 8.8512 up to 9.5942, a swing of -4.49%. Chinese economic news does have an effect, but changes tend to come less suddenly than they do out of the UK.
How yuan reach Chinese bank accounts
Inside China, people rely on Alipay or WeChat Pay most days. But if you’re sending money in from abroad, nearly every provider will route it straight to a local bank account, and that’s where the currency converts into yuan. Sometimes, you’ll find a provider that can pay out to one of these wallets, but you’ll have to check in advance since it’s not as common as with, say, euros or dollars. If your recipient lives far from a bank, or just prefers using their phone, ask about these alternatives before you decide.
There’s one detail worth double-checking: recipient names. You must enter the account holder’s name exactly as the bank records it, sometimes including pinyin and Chinese characters. Explaining why you’re sending funds is another required step, and Chinese banks will check your reason closely. Details must match on both ends. Are you helping family, paying tuition or covering invoices? If it’s regular family support, take a look at our remittance guide for UK and China rules to see what records to keep and what needs reporting.
Transfer fees and comparing providers
At the moment, the best deal listed here pays out 8,873.58 CNY if you send 1000 pounds. If you’re dealing with transfers around the 5000 mark, look at Wise, since sums of that size can shift the rankings, fixed fees have less impact as amounts go up. What your recipient receives after every deduction is the number to watch, much more than just the stated fee.
For example, Wise shows a 4.84 GBP fee on 1000 pounds to China, and the all-in cost to you is 0.48%. If you're a business sending larger sums, OFX might make more sense, with 0.70% total cost for 5000 pounds. Banks on the high street tuck part of the fee into their exchange rate, so the total cost tends to be higher even when their ‘fee’ looks low. See our guide to hidden bank markups for a breakdown. Our full ranking method is detailed in How we compare if you want to see how each provider stacks up.
Transfer timing, holidays and amounts
Timing transfers to China gets complicated because of national holidays. During Lunar New Year, expect a week of full bank closures, with some factories taking even longer off; Golden Week in October also slows things down, just not quite as dramatically. So if you need to clear payments for suppliers, get them in before holidays start. Another point, China runs on a single time zone, always eight hours ahead of London in winter (seven ahead when UK clocks change). That means a transfer late in your UK day typically won’t begin processing until China’s banks open the following day.
If you pay suppliers in yuan on a regular basis, a forward contract can lock in your rate now and prevent movement before your due date. Anyone handling overseas supplier payments can check our documentation checklist for the records you’ll likely need. Banks may contact you for details if you move larger sums, asking about the source of funds to comply with regulations. Curious how pounds measure up against a completely floating partner?
