Who uses pound to dollar transfers and for what
This is one of the world's most actively used currency routes. Picture a designer in Manchester billing a client based in Austin. Or take the retired couple moving cash for a Florida property, needing dollars for their deposit. American students handle tuition in pounds when at a university in London. A UK pensioner in Arizona? She'll want her sterling payments switched to US dollars on a steady schedule.
Smaller, repeat transfers react more to the percentage margin than to flat service charges. But send a large sum once and every tenth of a point shows up in real money. You'll want to keep one number in mind: 1,339.78 USD is the mid-market equivalent of 1000 pounds right now, and you'll need it to judge if a quote is fair (Mid-market means no provider’s margin is included). Moving money the other direction, from the US to the UK? The USD → GBP page explains how to do just that.

Two currencies that move on their own
The pound is managed by the Bank of England, while the Federal Reserve is responsible for the dollar. Neither currency is fixed to another. Sterling has moved independently since the UK left the European exchange rate mechanism, so you'll see rates changing in real time on weekdays. The old trading term "cable" for GBP/USD goes back to the transatlantic telegraph cable, which once connected London and New York for financial quotes.
The main drivers are differences between each economy: interest rates (and market guesses about future rate decisions), economic data like inflation or jobs, and swings in risk appetite, where investors sometimes flock to the dollar as a safer place to hold cash. Over the last year, GBP/USD moved +2.07%, peaked at 1.3812 and dropped as far as 1.3040. When you send a large amount, this range is a reason to choose your timing with care.
Delivery process: how dollars reach the US
Usually, your UK funds exit by Faster Payments, the standard route for domestic transfers. On the US end, the dollars are received by ACH, or by wire, ACH being less costly but not as fast, wire being faster but sometimes attracting a small receiving fee at the American bank.
IBANs don't exist in the US, so your recipient will give you their standard account number plus a nine-digit ABA routing number (this identifies their bank). Some providers have American accounts themselves, so they'll pay out in-country like a local US transaction, avoiding the string of banks that collect fees along the way. For details, see our ACH versus wire transfer guide, and our piece on intermediary bank fees explains deductions from international wires.
Comparing costs: what you'll pay and how to check
Banks on the high street rarely show a clear fee when moving pounds to dollars. Instead, their margin is built into the exchange rate. So the price might look fine until you compare it against the mid-market rate. For steps on working out your actual cost, have a look at how banks mark up the exchange rate. Details on how we rank providers are on How we compare.
With 1000 pounds, Wise gives you the best payout right now, providing 1,333.31 USD. To compare, Wise charges 4.84 GBP in fees on the amount, and the total you give up including their rate markup comes to 0.48%. For Revolut, the full cost is 0.50%. You can read our Wise review or the Revolut review for more on how these offers work.
When timing and larger amounts matter most
Let’s put this in context. If GBP/USD moves by a cent, and you’re sending 200,000 pounds for a house, you’ll see a two thousand dollar shift in the amount received. Many buyers don’t want to face that swing, so they might fix an exchange rate ahead of time with a forward contract; or they could set a specific target and use a limit order to send only if the market hits it.
Big transfers come with extra questions from your provider: you may be asked for proof of the money’s origin, so gather bank statements or the sale paperwork. The guide to proving source of funds lists the documents that usually work. Pay attention to cut-off times. Sending money late on Friday could mean settlement won’t finish until after the weekend. Plus, UK and US holidays rarely land together, so one side might be closed while the other’s open. Got euros in the mix as well? Compare GBP → EUR for options to the eurozone.
