Who sends pounds to Poland

Ever since Poland joined the EU in 2004, a steady community of Poles in the UK sends money home in pounds. You might know someone who sets aside a part of each pay packet for family in Lublin, or covers the mortgage on a flat back in Wrocław. Quite a few people transfer on the same date every month, so even a small shift in the exchange rate can add up significantly over the year.

But it's not only families. Plenty of British buyers purchase flats in Kraków, Gdańsk, or Warsaw. Some do it for rental income, others for their own travels. They often need to pay deposits and notary fees in zloty. UK companies sometimes pay Polish suppliers in PLN too, instead of pounds. And Polish students in Britain often have to transfer money back the other way, if that's your case, you’ll find more on the PLN → GBP page.

So, whoever is sending, the pattern’s clear: pounds go out, zloty lands in a Polish account. If you want a quick reference: at the mid-market rate, 1000 pounds equals 5,272.75 PLN PLN, a benchmark for any quote you get.

What drives the pound-zloty rate

Monetary policy in the UK rests with the Bank of England; in Poland, Narodowy Bank Polski sets the rules. The zloty floats; the market values it. There’s no peg to the euro, so the zloty stands alone, one unit splits into 100 groszy. Sterling floats too. That means GBP/PLN pits two unanchored currencies against each other.

So, what moves them? First, differences in expected interest rates between London and Warsaw make a big impact. Second is the euro’s influence: since Poland’s economy leans on the eurozone, a move in GBP → EUR tends to ripple over. Third, regional risk appetite: if investors get cautious about central Europe, the zloty can weaken very quickly.

This pairing moved +9.36% in the past year, sitting somewhere between 4.7847 and 5.2728. If you’re sending money for a mortgage or big deposit, that swing can matter a lot.

How zloty reach a Polish account

To pay into a Polish account, you’ll want the IBAN (it starts with PL), together with the recipient’s full name. Domestic Polish transfers work through Elixir, while Express Elixir takes care of instant payments at any hour. While BLIK is popular for paying in shops or online, it’s a domestic app, international transfers don’t use it. On your side, UK Faster Payments usually sends money to the provider’s UK account within minutes.

If the transfer service has a Polish bank account, they can move zloty through those local rails, so the money reaches the recipient without delays or deduction by other banks. A classic international wire might go the long way, and extra banks in the chain can skim off fees as explained in intermediary bank fees.

There’s another point to think about. If you send pounds to a PLN account, the recipient’s bank will do a conversion at their own rate. If you convert before sending, you lock in the zloty amount beforehand, much less uncertainty that way.

What you actually pay for conversion

The mid-market rate, 5.2728, is where the banks trade, not what you get. What counts is how much the recipient actually receives compared to that benchmark. If you’re sending 1000 pounds, the best payout right now comes from Wise, which delivers 5,247.25 PLN PLN.

Fees and rate markups together shape your total cost. For instance, Wise charges 4.84 GBP for that size and pays out 5,247.25 PLN, their total cost is 0.48%. Or you might consider Revolut if you or your family use it already; the total cost there is 0.50%.

Banks often appear free on paper, but that’s because their profit sits in the rate itself. Have a look at Bank exchange rate markup for details. Our table sorts providers by what the recipient gets, not just fees, and How we compare goes into how these numbers are calculated.

Timing transfers and sending large sums

Poland stays one hour ahead of the UK, both countries moving their clocks at the same times each year. So, if you send money on a Friday afternoon in Britain, it might miss the Polish banking deadline and settle Monday, as detailed in value dates and cut-off times. Watch for Polish public holidays too, days like 1 November or 11 November can slow things, even if the UK is open as usual.

Bigger transfers come with extra checks. For a property purchase, expect the provider to ask about the source of the money; keep items like payslips, sales contracts or bank statements to hand. There’s more on acceptable documents at Proof of source of funds.

If you want to wait for a better rate, you can place a limit order to convert only when GBP/PLN hits a level you’ve set, see FX limit orders for how this works. For more detail on the PLN as a currency, take a look at the Polish Zloty page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1000 pounds in Polish zloty?

Using the mid-market rate, 1000 pounds is 5,272.75 PLN PLN right now. The final payout will usually be a bit less, depending on which service you choose. The provider offering the highest amount at the moment is 5,247.25 PLN PLN.

What is the cheapest way to send pounds to Poland?

A specialist transfer provider that exchanges close to the mid-market rate and shows fees upfront almost always beats banks on cost. As of now, Wise is delivering the best payout. Always compare how many zloty your family or recipient actually receives, fees might matter, but the rate markup is often larger.

What details do I need to send money to a Polish bank account?

You'll need the recipient’s exact name as listed at their bank, plus their IBAN (which always starts with PL). Sometimes you’ll also be asked for the BIC. Double-check every digit of the IBAN before you send, a single mistake can stall or bounce the transfer.

Does the zloty follow the euro?

The zloty isn’t pegged to the euro, and Poland sets its own rates, so the link isn’t official. Even so, the economies are closely bound together, which means the zloty often moves in the same direction as the euro against the pound. Polish rate changes or local issues can draw the currencies apart at times.

Should I convert pounds before sending them to Poland?

In most situations, yes, it lets you know the exact zloty amount that will credit, and avoids the recipient's bank applying its in-house rate. However, if your recipient has a sterling account in Poland and isn’t rushing to use PLN, sending pounds may sometimes work. Best to ask first.
