The HKD/JPY exchange rate at a glance
This page follows the rate for Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Japanese Yen (JPY) and compares it with what real providers charge to convert one into the other. On October 30, 2026, 1 HKD buys 20.0596 JPY, and one JPY equals 0.049851 HKD.
The figure at the top is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between the price at which large banks buy HKD and the price at which they sell it. Treat it as a neutral benchmark: no fee or margin is built in, which is exactly why consumers almost never receive it in full.
What ends up on the JPY side depends on two separate costs: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the fee you see on the order screen. Further down we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and share simple habits to keep more of your money when converting HKD to JPY.
One year of HKD to JPY
Compared with a year ago, the HKD/JPY rate shows a change of +0.96%. During that year the top of the range was 20.8960 JPY per HKD, and the lowest was 19.5641. At 20.0596, the rate today sits somewhere inside that range.
That range between high and low puts the movement into real terms. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, sometimes more than the choice of provider.
Rates are pushed around by interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
How to get a better HKD to JPY rate
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive if the rate is poor. What you want to know is how much JPY arrives for your HKD, which combines the markup and the fee.
When you pay by card abroad, you can get a choice between your own currency and the local one. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.
Timing plays a role too. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. For transfers that can wait, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, but the target may never be reached.
The payment method matters as well. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
Sending a larger amount from HKD to JPY
Make sure the provider is licensed. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own and that offers protection if the company fails.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Some also let you lock in a rate for a short period.
Where you pay with HKD and JPY
Hong Kong Dollar is the legal tender in Hong Kong SAR China. Japanese Yen is the official currency of Japan. Knowing this helps for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.
People convert HKD to JPY for many reasons: paying suppliers, supporting relatives, buying property or simply travelling. Not every situation needs the same solution: a single big transfer calls for the best rate, while frequent smaller payments suffer more from flat charges.
Each country has its own payment habits. Some recipients expect a bank account number with a local bank code, others an IBAN and in certain countries payout to a mobile wallet is the norm. Have the recipient’s full details ready before you begin.
Sample calculation for 10,000.00 HKD
Take a conversion of 10,000.00 HKD. At the mid-market rate of 20.0596, you can work out the upper limit of what is possible on the JPY side. In reality every provider keeps something, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.
Of the 9 providers we compared, Wise gave the best result, with 199,622.76 JPY in the end. The gap between 199,622.76 JPY and the theoretical maximum is the real price of the transfer.
Keep in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, whereas the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Run your own figure through the converter to see the ranking that applies to you.
Choosing a route to send JPY
With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment via the SWIFT system. Your transfer may hop between several banks before it arrives, and each can take a fee. Expect anything from one to a few working days, and the final deduction is often only visible afterwards.
Specialised transfer services often work differently. They keep money in accounts in both regions, which means your payment and the payout both happen domestically. This usually cuts both time and cost, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.
Delivery time depends on several factors: funding method, verification and holidays in the sending and receiving country. New customers sometimes wait a little longer because the provider has to verify your identity. Upload your documents early if timing is tight.
Why we compare total cost
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much JPY the recipient would end up with. We do this for 9 providers, ranked from most to least received.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 30, 2026. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, since markets keep moving, especially when markets are busy.
GoldexPay is independent. Some of the links are affiliate links. They have no influence on the order: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Exchange rate markup and fees on HKD/JPY
Most providers do not convert at the mid-market rate itself. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. This is known as the exchange rate margin. With a 2% markup, for instance, you lose roughly 2 HKD on every 100 HKD, without it ever appearing as a fee.
Next to that markup, most banks ask for a separate fee. It may be a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Be wary of anything sold as commission-free. The cost often sits in the rate instead. The only fair way to compare is the final JPY figure for the same amount of HKD, which is how the table above is sorted.
