Mexican Peso to Japanese Yen: rate, costs and context
The page you are reading tracks the rate for Mexican Peso (MXN) and Japanese Yen (JPY) and compares it with what real providers charge to convert one into the other. On October 31, 2026, 1 MXN equals 8.3534 JPY, while one JPY is worth 0.119712 MXN.
The rate shown above is the interbank mid rate. It is calculated as the middle of the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. Treat it as a neutral benchmark: nobody earns anything on it directly, so consumers almost never receive it in full.
What you actually receive depends on two things: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Below the converter and chart we show how those costs are built up, show how they add up on a real amount and share simple habits to get closer to the mid-market rate when converting MXN to JPY.
The MXN/JPY rate over twelve months
Across the last year, the price of MXN in JPY has changed by +0.48%. Within those twelve months the highest level was 9.4148 JPY for one MXN, and the bottom of the range was 8.2409. Today’s rate of 8.3534 can be measured against those two levels.
The spread between the year’s extremes is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. On a large conversion, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.
Exchange rates respond to central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Only use providers that are regulated. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own and that offers protection if the company fails.
Verify every detail of the recipient. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Exchange rate markup and fees on MXN/JPY
The majority of services stay away from the rate of 8.3534 as such. They quote a slightly worse rate and keep the difference. This is known as the exchange rate margin. If the margin is 2%, then about 2 out of every 100 MXN never reach the recipient.
On top of the margin, many providers add a visible fee. That can be a fixed amount per transfer, a percentage of the amount or both at once. With international bank payments extra deductions can follow, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Look twice at offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". The cost often sits in the rate instead. The reliable test is the total amount that arrives in JPY for the same amount of MXN, which is how the table above is sorted.
Why we compare total cost
We start from the live mid-market rate for MXN/JPY. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, to calculate what actually arrives in JPY. In total 9 providers are included, ranked from most to least received.
The figures refresh every half hour, with October 31, 2026 as the reference date. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. Some of the links are affiliate links. The order is never affected by them: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
MXN and JPY around the world
Mexican Peso is used in Mexico. Japanese Yen is the official currency of Japan. This matters if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.
People convert MXN to JPY for many reasons: moving abroad, studying, doing business or sending a gift. What suits one case may not suit another: a single big transfer benefits most from a sharp rate, whereas frequent smaller payments suffer more from flat charges.
Payout methods vary from country to country. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet and in certain countries cash pickup or mobile money is common. Check which details the provider needs before you start.
Paying less when you change MXN into JPY
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A small fee on its own says little if the rate is poor. The fairest figure to compare is how much JPY arrives for your MXN, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a JPY country, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Always opt to pay in the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Timing can also matter. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Finally, look at how you pay. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer reduces what you pay in flat fees.
How MXN to JPY transfers travel
Your regular bank usually sends the money over the SWIFT network. The money can pass through one or more correspondent banks, sometimes taking a fee at each step. Expect anything from one to a few working days, with the full cost not always known upfront.
Specialised transfer services often work differently. They have local accounts on both sides, so your MXN stays in the MXN system and the recipient is paid in JPY from a local account. That is often faster and cheaper, and the amount that arrives is known in advance.
Speed is not down to the provider alone: funding method, verification and holidays in the sending and receiving country. A first transfer can take longer while identity checks are done. Get verified before you need to send when a deadline is involved.
A worked example with 20,000.00 MXN
Consider an amount of 20,000.00 MXN. At the mid-market rate of 8.3534, you can work out the upper limit of what any provider could deliver in JPY. In practice nobody hands over that full amount, because margins and fees come off first.
Of the 9 providers we compared, Wise delivered the most, with 166,245.45 JPY at the time of our last update. The difference between that figure and the mid-market amount is what the conversion actually cost you.
Note that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Enter your own amount in the converter to see the ranking that applies to you.
