Who sends dollars to India
Most USD to INR transfers are personal in nature. Maybe you're an Indian software developer in Seattle, sending money each month to family in Pune. Or you're a couple in New Jersey, making stage payments on a flat in Hyderabad. A retired NRI often helps with medical bills for someone in Kolkata. With regular, small or mid-sized transfers like these, the total cost per payment really adds up over time.
There’s plenty of business activity as well. Indian IT and outsourcing firms collect payments from American clients in dollars, then cover salaries and rent in rupees. Freelancers in cities like Bengaluru or Delhi see a similar flow, just at a smaller scale. Sometimes things reverse: Indian families sending tuition to the US need to buy dollars and face their own set of charges, which you can compare for INR/USD at INR → USD.

How India manages the rupee
The Reserve Bank of India monitors the rupee closely. While it doesn't peg the currency to a fixed rate, it does step in to buy or sell dollars when needed, aiming to curb any extreme moves. The capital account isn’t completely open, so, compared to the euro or the pound, you'll find more rules decide how funds move in and out of the country.
Several things drive USD/INR day to day. India's need to import oil means a rising oil bill pushes up demand for dollars. Foreign investments, both in stocks and bonds, impact flows too, as investors switch in and out of rupees. Watch US interest rates as well; they can pull the dollar higher and make the rupee feel heavy even when India's economic signals look solid.
Over the last year, the rate shifted by +7.06%, setting a high of 96.8020 and a low at 88.4909. If you measure over five years, you’ll see a change of +26.76%.
How dollars reach Indian accounts
When you send money from the US, it settles into an Indian bank account as rupees, through international networks. Within India, payments get routed through NEFT, IMPS, RTGS, or, increasingly, UPI for instant transactions. Those local rails matter once the rupees arrive, for example if your recipient wants to pay a landlord or cover school fees right away. But to get the money into India, you’ll need their account number, the bank’s SWIFT code, and their full name exactly as it appears on the account.
Banks in India usually ask for the purpose of your transfer, maybe family support, savings, or a gift. Your money transfer service might prompt you for this during the process. If you state the correct purpose, you save yourself questions or delays later; the list is covered at purpose of payment codes. The recipient's bank is often able to issue a letter as documentary proof of the incoming transfer, which you'll find useful for taxes or special purchases.
If your recipient lives abroad but still holds Indian accounts, they may use an NRE or NRO account. The rules and tax treatment differ for each. There are also a few services now that let you send to a UPI ID, not just a bank account, so check with your recipient about their preference and what your provider supports.
What you pay when sending dollars
The mid-market rate is 94.9551. If you started with 1,000 dollars at that rate, you'd see 94,955.10 INR rupees, but after fees and margins, your recipient gets a bit less. Right now, the lowest-priced provider in our comparison delivers 94,485.07 INR on that amount; we list the name as Wise.
You’ll see notable differences here because it's a very active corridor. For instance, Wise shows a separate fee of 4.95 USD and your recipient gets 94,485.07 INR. The real cost, counting the margin, is 0.50%. Compare that with Remitly, focused mostly on remittances: its total on the same transfer comes to –. If you’re sending every month, it’s smart to review these numbers from time to time, not just when you start.
Banks sometimes look cheap because they promote low or zero fees, while the real charge is hidden in the exchange rate. For more details, see our explanation at bank exchange rate markup. Here, providers rank by how much the recipient actually receives; for our process, see How we compare.
When transfers arrive and what delays them
India keeps one time zone, UTC+5:30. Depending on whether you’re on the US east or west coast, the time difference will run from 9.5 to 13.5 hours, changing with daylight savings. So, a payment sent one US evening might reach your recipient the next Indian morning. But a transfer made late on a Friday in New York could easily be credited after the weekend. India also observes regional bank holidays with dates that vary by state, so payments may be cleared in one city but held up in another.
If you’re sending a larger sum, maybe for a property purchase, or moving your savings, the documentation is at least as important as the rate itself. Providers and banks may want more details about where your funds came from, and tax consequences differ by transaction type. For an introduction to what the authorities look for, see our guides on tax on remittances for the sender and receiver and cross-border gifts. For your own case, a tax adviser is best placed to clarify.

What is the cheapest way to send money from the US to India?
Look at the amount your recipient gets, not just the stated fee, since most of the total cost comes from the exchange margin. At this moment, Wise is the most cost-effective provider according to our data. Specialist transfer services usually offer better value than a standard bank wire, but check again if your sending amount changes.
Does the Reserve Bank of India control the rupee rate?
Not completely. While the rupee responds to market forces, the Reserve Bank of India may enter the market to limit wider or sharper moves, mainly by acting in the dollar market. It doesn't keep the rupee rate fixed, so you’ll see the figures above shift each year.
Can I send dollars to an NRE or NRO account?
You can. Most providers allow payments into Indian bank accounts, including both NRE and NRO types. However, the conditions for each account differ, always check with the recipient bank so you know what paperwork is needed and how they'll handle the funds.
How long does a USD to INR transfer take?
Many money transfer providers deliver same day or within one business day, while a traditional bank wire might take several days. Delays can occur if you hit weekends or regional holidays in India. Having the accurate account details and payment purpose cuts down on rerouted or returned transfers.
