The BRL/XAG exchange rate: rate, costs and context
This page brings together the rate for Brazilian Real (BRL) and Silver (XAG), together with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. On October 31, 2026, 1 BRL equals 0.00372989 XAG, while one XAG comes to 268.1047 BRL.
That headline number is the interbank mid rate. It is calculated as the middle of what wholesale traders pay for BRL and what they ask for it. It works as a neutral benchmark: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
The amount that lands in the other account depends on two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and the visible transfer or service fee. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and share simple habits to lose less on the exchange when converting BRL to XAG.
Reading a gold or silver price
Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, slightly heavier than a regular ounce, at around 31.1 grams. The codes XAU, XAG, XPT and XPD stand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, so the metal behaves like one side of a currency pair. The figure above refers to one troy ounce.
The rate is based on the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Retail products carry a premium above that price, to pay for production, distribution and the seller’s margin. The buyback price is normally lower than spot.
You can own precious metals in several forms. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. Professional storage charges an annual fee but keeps the metal in your name. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Tax rules also differ. Across the EU, investment gold is normally VAT-free, but silver is generally taxed. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.
About this comparison
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, which gives the amount the recipient receives. We do this for 0 providers, ranked from most to least received.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, with October 31, 2026 as the reference date. The final price is always set by the provider itself, because their rate can move between our updates.
We are not owned by any provider. Some of the links are affiliate links, which help fund our work. That never changes the ranking: providers are sorted purely by how much XAG the recipient gets.
Getting the most XAG for your BRL
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive because the margin can make up the difference. The number that matters is the XAG amount after every cost, which combines the markup and the fee.
At foreign tills and cash machines, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Watch the timing as well. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. When there is no deadline, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It saves you from checking the rate every day, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Also check how you fund the transfer. Card payments often cost more than a bank transfer, and a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer reduces what you pay in flat fees.
Safety checks before you convert BRL to XAG
Only use providers that are regulated. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, like a statement or a sales contract. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Most providers stay away from the mid-market rate as such. They shift the rate in their own favour and keep the difference. This is known as the exchange rate margin. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 BRL on every 100 BRL, without it ever appearing as a fee.
Besides the hidden margin, most banks charge an explicit fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. On classic bank transfers abroad extra deductions can follow, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Look twice at anything sold as commission-free. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The reliable test is the final XAG figure for exactly the same sum, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.
The BRL/XAG rate over twelve months
Over the past twelve months, the BRL/XAG rate shows a change of +51.86%. In that period the highest level was 0.00372989 XAG for one BRL, and the lowest was 0.00215864. At 0.00372989, the rate today is easy to place within that band.
That range between high and low puts the movement into real terms. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.
The rate reflects news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If timing matters to you, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
