The XAG/GBP exchange rate explained
This overview tracks the rate for Silver (XAG) and British Pound (GBP), together with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. At the latest update on October 31, 2026, 1 XAG equals 36.8398 GBP, while 1 GBP is worth 0.027145 XAG.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is calculated as the middle of what wholesale traders pay for XAG and what they ask for it. Think of it as a fair reference point: nobody earns anything on it directly, so few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
The amount that lands in the other account depends on two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and the fee you see on the order screen. Further down we show how those costs are built up, show how they add up on a real amount and share simple habits to keep more of your money when you change XAG into GBP.
Staying safe with bigger XAG to GBP transfers
Only use providers that are regulated. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Verify every detail of the recipient. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Practical ways to save on XAG/GBP
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A low headline fee proves nothing because the margin can make up the difference. The number that matters is the GBP amount after every cost, which combines margin and fee.
At foreign tills and cash machines, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Always opt to pay in the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Timing plays a role too. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. For transfers that can wait, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once XAG/GBP reaches a level you choose. It saves you from checking the rate every day, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Finally, look at how you pay. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Sending less often but in larger amounts means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
Reading a gold or silver price
Gold and silver prices are expressed per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams. XAU is the code for gold, XAG for silver, XPT for platinum and XPD for palladium, and they are treated like a currency in this pair. The rate shown is the price of one troy ounce.
What you see is the spot price: the price professionals pay for large quantities. Buy a coin or small bar and you pay a premium on top, covering minting, handling and the dealer’s margin. Selling back typically happens below the spot price.
Ownership comes in more than one shape. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. Professional storage comes with storage costs but takes care of security. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Check how tax applies as well. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. We show prices, not investment advice.
Where the cost of converting XAG to GBP hides
Nearly every bank and app do not convert at the rate of 36.8398 itself. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and keep the difference. That gap is called the exchange rate margin. If the margin is 2%, then you lose roughly 2 XAG on every 100 XAG, without it ever appearing as a fee.
On top of the margin, most banks charge an explicit fee. This is usually a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, so the recipient gets less than you expected.
Be wary of anything sold as commission-free. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The only fair way to compare is the final GBP figure for an identical XAG amount, which is how the table above is sorted.
Recent movement in the XAG/GBP rate
Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate has changed by -35.64%. During that year the rate peaked at 66.6781 GBP for one XAG, while the lowest was 36.8398. At 36.8398, the rate today can be measured against those two levels.
That range between high and low shows how much the rate can move in practice. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, occasionally more than the difference between providers.
Rates are pushed around by news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
A worked example with 20.00 XAG
Let’s use a conversion of 20.00 XAG. Using the reference rate of 36.8398, that sum sets the ceiling for what is possible on the GBP side. No service pays out that exact figure, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.
Of the 3 providers we compared, Revolut delivered the most: the recipient gets 733.12 GBP after all costs. The difference between that figure and the mid-market amount shows the true cost, fees and margin combined.
Note that the cheapest provider for 20.00 XAG is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Enter your own amount in the converter to see the ranking that applies to you.
Why we compare total cost
Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 36.8398. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, to calculate what actually arrives in GBP. The comparison covers 3 providers, ranked from most to least received.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 31, 2026 as the reference date. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, since markets keep moving.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. We may earn a commission through some links, which help fund our work. They have no influence on the order: the provider that delivers the most GBP comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.
