Silver to Japanese Yen: rate, costs and context
This page tracks the rate for Silver (XAG) and Japanese Yen (JPY) and sets it next to the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. As of October 30, 2026, 1 XAG buys 7,875.88 JPY, while one JPY is worth 0.00012697 XAG.
That headline number is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between what wholesale traders pay for XAG and what they ask for it. It works as a neutral benchmark: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
The amount that lands in the other account comes down to two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the fee you see on the order screen. Further down we show how those costs are built up, show how they add up on a real amount and give concrete ways to keep more of your money when you swap Silver for Japanese Yen.
Where the cost of converting XAG to JPY hides
Most providers stay away from the mid-market rate itself. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and pocket the gap. People call this the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 XAG on every 100 XAG, without it ever appearing as a fee.
Next to that markup, a lot of services ask for a separate fee. This is usually a flat charge per payment, a percentage of the amount or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network other banks along the route may take their own cut, and those only show up at the end.
Take a close look at services that advertise free transfers. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. What really counts is how much JPY the recipient ends up with for the same amount of XAG, and that is the figure our table ranks on.
Troy ounces, spot price and premiums
Gold and silver prices are expressed per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams. XAU is the code for gold, XAG for silver, XPT for platinum and XPD for palladium, and they are treated like a currency in this pair. The rate shown is the price of one troy ounce.
The rate is based on the spot price: the price professionals pay for large quantities. Buy a coin or small bar and you pay a premium on top, to pay for production, distribution and the seller’s margin. Selling back typically happens below the spot price.
There are different ways to hold metal. Storing metal at home brings its own risks and costs. An allocated vault account costs a yearly fee, with the metal registered to you. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.
Check how tax applies as well. Across the EU, investment gold is normally VAT-free, but silver is generally taxed. We show prices, not investment advice.
How to get a better XAG to JPY rate
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive when the margin is high. The fairest figure to compare is how much JPY arrives for your XAG, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a JPY country, you may be asked whether to pay in XAG or in the local currency. This is called dynamic currency conversion. It usually comes with a steep markup. Choose the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.
Timing can also matter. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. For transfers that can wait, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Sending less often but in larger amounts also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
How our XAG/JPY comparison works
Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 7,875.88. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, to calculate what actually arrives in JPY. The comparison covers 1 providers, placed side by side.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, with October 30, 2026 as the reference date. The final price is always set by the provider itself, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. We may earn a commission through some links, which help fund our work. The order is never affected by them: providers are sorted purely by how much JPY the recipient gets.
Recent movement in the XAG/JPY rate
Across the last year, the exchange rate moved by -35.52%. In that period the highest level was 14,055.26 JPY per XAG, while the bottom of the range was 7,875.88. Today’s rate of 7,875.88 sits somewhere inside that range.
That range between high and low shows how much the rate can move in practice. For a bigger amount, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.
The rate reflects interest rate decisions, inflation figures, trade flows and general market sentiment. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
Example: converting 20.00 XAG
Take an amount of 20.00 XAG. At the mid-market rate of 7,875.88, you can work out the upper limit of what any provider could deliver in JPY. In reality every provider keeps something, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.
Looking at all 1 providers we track, BullionVault delivered the most: the recipient gets 156,573.29 JPY at the time of our last update. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.
Keep in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, whereas the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Run your own figure through the converter to see the ranking that applies to you.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
Big sums usually trigger extra verification. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
