CNY to USD explained
The page you are reading tracks the rate for Chinese Yuan (CNY) and US Dollar (USD) and sets it next to the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. On October 30, 2026, 1 CNY buys 0.150256 USD, while a single USD is worth 6.6553 CNY.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is the midpoint between what wholesale traders pay for CNY and what they ask for it. It works as a fair reference point: it contains no profit margin and no fees, and that is why you rarely get it as a private customer.
What ends up on the USD side is shaped by two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the fee you see on the order screen. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, put them side by side and list practical steps to keep more of your money when converting CNY to USD.
Safety checks before you convert CNY to USD
Check the provider’s licence first. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own.
Verify every detail of the recipient. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
How GoldexPay compares CNY to USD providers
Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 0.150256. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, to calculate what actually arrives in USD. We do this for 8 providers, placed side by side.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 30, 2026 as the reference date. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, and it can differ slightly from our calculation, especially when markets are busy.
GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links, which help fund our work. They have no influence on the order: the provider that delivers the most USD comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.
A worked example with 5,000.00 CNY
Let’s use a transfer of 5,000.00 CNY. Converted at the pure mid-market rate (0.150256), you can work out the upper limit of what any provider could deliver in USD. In reality every provider keeps something, because margins and fees come off first.
Across the 8 providers in our comparison, Revolut came out cheapest for this amount, with 747.52 USD in the end. The gap between 747.52 USD and the theoretical maximum shows the true cost, fees and margin combined.
Keep in mind that the cheapest provider for 5,000.00 CNY is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Run your own figure through the converter and check whether the order changes.
Getting the most USD for your CNY
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive if the rate is poor. The number that matters is the USD amount after every cost, which combines margin and fee.
When you pay by card abroad, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It tends to be among the most expensive ways to convert. Pick the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.
Timing can also matter. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. For transfers that can wait, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once CNY/USD reaches a level you choose. It saves you from checking the rate every day, though the target may never be reached.
Finally, look at how you pay. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
How CNY to USD transfers travel
Your regular bank usually sends the money over the SWIFT network. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, each of which can deduct a charge. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, with the full cost not always known upfront.
Many money transfer apps use a different model. They hold balances in both currencies, which means your payment and the payout both happen domestically. The result tends to be quicker and less expensive, and the amount that arrives is known in advance.
How fast a transfer really is depends on more than the provider: how you pay, the time of day, cut-off times and bank holidays in both countries. The very first payment may be slower because the provider has to verify your identity. Upload your documents early if the money has to arrive on a set date.
Where the cost of converting CNY to USD hides
Nearly every bank and app will not give you the rate of 0.150256 itself. They shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. People call this the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that for every 100 CNY you convert, about 2 CNY worth disappears before the money arrives.
On top of the margin, many providers add a visible fee. It may be a flat charge per payment, a percentage of the amount or a mix of both. For transfers sent through the banking network other banks along the route may take their own cut, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Look twice at offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. What really counts is the total amount that arrives in USD for exactly the same sum, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.
The CNY/USD rate over twelve months
Across the last year, the CNY/USD rate moved by +6.87%. During that year the rate peaked at 0.150256 USD for one CNY, and the low point came in at 0.140319. Today’s rate of 0.150256 can be measured against those two levels.
That range between high and low shows how much the rate can move in practice. For a bigger amount, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, occasionally more than the difference between providers.
The rate reflects central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
The countries behind CNY and USD
Chinese Yuan is the legal tender in China. US Dollar is what people pay with in United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama. That is useful to know if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.
There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert CNY to USD: moving abroad, studying, doing business or sending a gift. Each situation asks for something different: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, while regular small amounts are more sensitive to fixed fees.
Each country has its own payment habits. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet and in certain countries cash pickup or mobile money is common. Check which details the provider needs before you start.
