Who uses the euro to rupee exchange

If you're living and working in Europe and supporting family back in India, this exchange is likely familiar. Many Indians in countries like Germany, France or the Netherlands transfer money home for everything from family costs to loan payments, or even savings. Students and researchers from India in Paris, Dublin or Munich, for instance, make use of these transfers regularly. But you might sometimes find things going in the opposite direction: a student in Berlin could well get a rent payment arriving from Pune, sent as rupees to Europe in the same month.

Plenty of businesses use this flow. European firms pay Indian designers, engineers or support teams in rupees, while Indian exporters bill their European customers in euros. Smaller exchanges are common too, think tourists getting funds changed for trips to Rajasthan or Kerala. Right now, the mid-market rate converts 1000 euros into 106,090.71 INR. That figure sets the starting point for most comparisons.

Understanding the rupee, the euro and price changes

The rupee comes under the watch of the Reserve Bank of India, which operates a managed float. That means market forces usually set the rate, though RBI steps in from time to time when swings get too dramatic. You won't find the rupee traded nearly as freely outside India; India uses its own controls on capital leaving or entering the country. So, transfer providers depend on local bank partners to disburse funds within India.

And while the rupee pairs with the euro, it's the dollar that often has more pull. EUR/INR effectively follows a combination of EUR/USD and USD/INR, and if the euro weakens or strengthens against the dollar, the euro to rupee rate can swing as well. If you want to track that leg, see EUR → USD. Domestic events count too, India's foreign investment flows, changes in oil import costs and RBI interest rate decisions can all affect where the rupee trades. Over the last year, the pair’s range has been +3.53%, with a high of 112.2627 and a low of 101.8341.

How money gets paid out in India

Indian banks don't use IBAN. If you're sending funds to a local account, the recipient's account number and 11-character IFSC code are essential, with money often routed across national payment rails, systems like IMPS or NEFT. You might have heard of UPI, India's instant system for domestic payments, but direct transfers from Europe still go via account number and IFSC code.

Or perhaps you’re dealing with a non-resident account. Here’s where it matters: NRE accounts accept foreign income in rupees, letting holders move that money out of India without barriers; NRO accounts are for Indian-sourced income and come with restrictions on outward remittance. If you’re sending your personal savings, check with the recipient’s bank which account is appropriate. Sometimes, the recipient may need an inward remittance certificate for official purposes, useful if a bank, tax office or lender ever asks where the funds came from.

Comparing costs across providers

Costs jump around more than you might expect, mostly due to differences in exchange rate margins. Today, the least expensive option in our table for this route is Wise and if you send 1000 euros, the recipient will get 105,570.58 INR in rupees.

Some names show up over and over again on this route, such as Wise or Remitly. Wise would payout 105,570.58 INR on 1000 euros, taking a fee of 4.90 EUR and an all-in cost of 0.49%. Remitly pays out – for the same sum, at a total cost of –. Some providers start off with more attractive rates just for the first transfer, so always check the actual rupee amount you’ll get before sending. Bank transfers from Europe to India often cost the most since you risk both exchange rate markups and third-party banking fees. If you’re curious about how banks price those margins, have a look at our guide here: bank exchange rate markups.

Sending larger sums or timing your transfer

For most people, money reaches India quickly, sometimes in minutes, but often within one working day. Any first-time transfer or notably large amount might face extra checks, so if you need the funds there on a deadline (for tuition, a loan payment or similar), send in advance just in case. Should you wait for a better rate? That’s a judgement call, as EUR/INR could move up or down in the meantime.

If you’re moving a larger figure, whether for a property purchase or a family occasion, don't expect the same provider to stay the cheapest. At the 5000-euro level, Wise currently leads. Each provider has its own limits and might need paperwork proving where your money comes from. The rules on tax differ for senders and receivers, but we cover the basics in our tax on remittances overview. Our How we compare explains exactly how we calculate everything you see on this page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1000 euros in Indian rupees?

Currently, 1000 euros gets you 106,090.71 INR at the mid-market rate. The actual amount your recipient receives will be less once fees and margins are included. The cheapest offer we track right now delivers 105,570.58 INR.

What is the cheapest way to send euros to India?

Usually, choosing a specialist transfer provider that pays out in rupees straight into an Indian account is less expensive than using a traditional bank. Right now, Wise offers the lowest price on this send. Always look at the rupee payout, since even a small fee can be wiped out by a less favourable rate.

What details do I need to send money to an Indian bank account?

You’ll need the recipient’s full name as registered with their bank, the account number and the specific IFSC code of their branch. There’s no IBAN involved in India. You might be asked the reason for payment, for instance, family support or education.

Is it better to send euros or rupees?

Sending euros and having your provider exchange them to rupees at a visible, confirmed rate is usually better than sending euros and leaving the conversion to the recipient’s Indian bank. Banks tend to use less competitive rates. Always review the final rupee amount before you confirm any transfer.

What is the difference between an NRE and an NRO account?

NRE accounts are for money you’ve earned abroad; the funds in them can be repatriated easily. NRO accounts, on the other hand, hold income generated inside India, and come with restriction and forms if you want to send funds out. If you’re sending your own foreign earnings, you’ll usually be looking for the money to arrive in an NRE account.
