Indian Rupee to Japanese Yen: what you are looking at
This overview tracks the exchange rate between Indian Rupee (INR) and Japanese Yen (JPY) and compares it with what real providers charge to convert one into the other. On October 30, 2026, one INR is worth 1.6566 JPY, and 1 JPY equals 0.603656 INR.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate. It is calculated as the middle of the price at which large banks buy INR and the price at which they sell it. Treat it as the cleanest reference you can get: it contains no profit margin and no fees, so consumers almost never receive it in full.
What ends up on the JPY side is shaped by two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Below the converter and chart we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and list practical steps to get closer to the mid-market rate when you change INR into JPY.
About this comparison
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much JPY the recipient would end up with. In total 9 providers are included, placed side by side.
The figures refresh every half hour, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, since markets keep moving, especially when markets are busy.
We are not owned by any provider. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which help fund our work. The order is never affected by them: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Practical ways to save on INR/JPY
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive when the margin is high. The number that matters is the JPY amount after every cost, which combines margin and fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a JPY country, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Watch the timing as well. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. That avoids guessing, though the target may never be reached.
Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Sending less often but in larger amounts means fixed charges hit you fewer times.
100,000.00 INR to JPY, step by step
Let’s use an amount of 100,000.00 INR. Using the reference rate of 1.6566, that sum sets the ceiling for what is possible on the JPY side. In reality every provider keeps something, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.
Across the 9 providers in our comparison, Wise came out cheapest for this amount and paid out 164,841.03 JPY in the end. The difference between that figure and the mid-market amount is what the conversion actually cost you.
Bear in mind that the cheapest provider for 100,000.00 INR is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, while a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Run your own figure through the converter to see the ranking that applies to you.
Exchange rate markup and fees on INR/JPY
The majority of services do not convert at the rate of 1.6566 itself. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. This is known as the spread. With a 2% markup, for instance, for every 100 INR you convert, about 2 INR worth disappears before the money arrives.
Next to that markup, many providers ask for a separate fee. It may be a flat charge per payment, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments extra deductions can follow, so the recipient gets less than you expected.
Look twice at anything sold as commission-free. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The reliable test is the total amount that arrives in JPY for the same amount of INR, which is how the table above is sorted.
INR and JPY around the world
Indian Rupee is the currency of India. Japanese Yen is what people pay with in Japan. This matters for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.
There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert INR to JPY: moving abroad, studying, doing business or sending a gift. Not every situation needs the same solution: a one-off large payment benefits most from a sharp rate, whereas frequent smaller payments suffer more from flat charges.
Payout methods vary from country to country. Account formats differ: IBAN in one place, account and routing numbers in another and in certain countries cash pickup or mobile money is common. Ask the recipient for the exact details in advance.
Recent movement in the INR/JPY rate
Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate moved by -4.83%. During that year the highest level was 1.7767 JPY per INR, while the bottom of the range was 1.6108. The current 1.6566 can be measured against those two levels.
The spread between the year’s extremes is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, sometimes more than the choice of provider.
Rates are pushed around by central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
Safety checks before you convert INR to JPY
Only use providers that are regulated. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own and that offers protection if the company fails.
Verify every detail of the recipient. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Verify through a channel you trust.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, like a statement or a sales contract. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.
Bank transfer or money transfer service for JPY?
With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment via the SWIFT system. Your transfer may hop between several banks before it arrives, and each can take a fee. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, and the final deduction is often only visible afterwards.
Many money transfer apps use a different model. They hold balances in both currencies, so your INR stays in the INR system and the recipient is paid in JPY from a local account. The result tends to be quicker and less expensive, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.
How fast a transfer really is depends on more than the provider: funding method, verification and holidays in the sending and receiving country. The very first payment may be slower while identity checks are done. Get verified before you need to send when a deadline is involved.
