The RON/USD exchange rate at a glance
This page follows the price relationship between Romanian Leu (RON) and US Dollar (USD), together with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. On October 30, 2026, one RON is worth 0.209103 USD, while a single USD comes to 4.7823 RON.
The figure at the top is the mid-market rate, sometimes called the interbank rate. It is calculated as the middle of the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. It works as a neutral benchmark: it contains no profit margin and no fees, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
What ends up on the USD side depends on two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and the fee you see on the order screen. Further down we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and list practical steps to lose less on the exchange when you change RON into USD.
The RON/USD rate over twelve months
Compared with a year ago, the RON/USD rate has changed by -7.96%. In that period the highest level was 0.234949 USD per RON, and the bottom of the range was 0.208196. The current 0.209103 can be measured against those two levels.
The spread between the year’s extremes is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, even when the fee stays the same.
Rates are pushed around by news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If you are waiting for a particular level, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Most providers stay away from the mid-market rate itself. Instead they quote a slightly worse rate and keep the difference. That gap is called the markup. If the margin is 2%, then about 2 out of every 100 RON never reach the recipient.
On top of the margin, many providers charge an explicit fee. That can be a fixed amount per transfer, a percentage of the amount or a mix of both. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, and those only show up at the end.
Look twice at anything sold as commission-free. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The only fair way to compare is how much USD the recipient ends up with for exactly the same sum, and that is the figure our table ranks on.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.
Check names and account details twice. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details. Verify through a channel you trust.
Larger transfers often come with additional questions. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. Some also let you lock in a rate for a short period.
Choosing a route to send USD
A traditional bank sends your payment through SWIFT. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, sometimes taking a fee at each step. Expect anything from one to a few working days, and the exact cost is not always clear in advance.
Many money transfer apps use a different model. They have local accounts on both sides, so no money physically crosses the border: you pay in locally and the recipient is paid out locally. This usually cuts both time and cost, with the final USD amount fixed upfront.
Delivery time depends on several factors: funding method, verification and holidays in the sending and receiving country. A first transfer can take longer because the provider has to verify your identity. Get verified before you need to send if the money has to arrive on a set date.
How we rank providers for RON to USD
Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, to calculate what actually arrives in USD. In total 9 providers are included, so you can see the differences at a glance.
The figures refresh every half hour, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. The final price is always set by the provider itself, because their rate can move between our updates.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. Some of the links are affiliate links, which help fund our work. They have no influence on the order: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Practical ways to save on RON/USD
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A low headline fee proves nothing if the rate is poor. The number that matters is the amount received, which combines the markup and the fee.
If you pay or withdraw cash in a USD country, you may be asked whether to pay in RON or in the local currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Always opt to pay in the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Watch the timing as well. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. If you are not in a hurry, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. That avoids guessing, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
Where Romanian Leu and US Dollar are used
Romanian Leu is used in Romania. US Dollar is the official currency of United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama. Knowing this helps for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.
There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert RON to USD: paying suppliers, supporting relatives, buying property or simply travelling. Each situation asks for something different: a single big transfer calls for the best rate, whereas frequent smaller payments are more sensitive to fixed fees.
The way money is paid out also differs per country. Some recipients expect a bank account number with a local bank code, others an IBAN and in certain countries payout to a mobile wallet is the norm. Check which details the provider needs before you start.
5,000.00 RON to USD, step by step
Consider an amount of 5,000.00 RON. Using the reference rate of 0.209103, that sum sets the ceiling for what any provider could deliver in USD. No service pays out that exact figure, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.
Across the 9 providers in our comparison, Wise gave the best result and paid out 1,040.36 USD after all costs. The gap between 1,040.36 USD and the theoretical maximum shows the true cost, fees and margin combined.
Bear in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Try your actual amount in the calculator above to see the ranking that applies to you.
