US Dollar to Hong Kong Dollar: what you are looking at
This overview brings together the exchange rate between US Dollar (USD) and Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and sets it next to the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. At the latest update on October 30, 2026, 1 USD equals 7.8458 HKD, while a single HKD is worth 0.127457 USD.
The rate shown above is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between the price at which large banks buy USD and the price at which they sell it. Think of it as the cleanest reference you can get: nobody earns anything on it directly, which is exactly why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.
What ends up on the HKD side depends on two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and the fee you see on the order screen. Below the converter and chart we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and give concrete ways to lose less on the exchange when converting USD to HKD.
Choosing a route to send HKD
Your regular bank usually sends the money via the SWIFT system. The money can pass through one or more correspondent banks, sometimes taking a fee at each step. Delivery usually takes one to several working days, and the final deduction is often only visible afterwards.
Specialised transfer services often work differently. They hold balances in both currencies, so no money physically crosses the border: you pay in locally and the recipient is paid out locally. That is often faster and cheaper, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.
Delivery time depends on several factors: your payment method, cut-off times and public holidays on either side. The very first payment may be slower as the provider completes its checks. Upload your documents early when a deadline is involved.
What 1,000.00 USD gets you in HKD
Let’s use a transfer of 1,000.00 USD. At the mid-market rate of 7.8458, that sum sets the ceiling for what the recipient could get. In practice nobody hands over that full amount, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.
Across the 9 providers in our comparison, Wise delivered the most and paid out 7,806.97 HKD in the end. The gap between 7,806.97 HKD and the theoretical maximum is what the conversion actually cost you.
Bear in mind that the cheapest provider for 1,000.00 USD is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, whereas the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. How we rank providers for USD to HKD
We start from the live mid-market rate for USD/HKD. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, which gives the amount the recipient receives. We do this for 9 providers, ranked from most to least received.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 30, 2026 as the reference date. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, since markets keep moving.
GoldexPay is independent. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which help fund our work. They have no influence on the order: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Check the provider’s licence first. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own, which protects you if something goes wrong.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
Tips for converting USD to HKD
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive if the rate is poor. The fairest figure to compare is how much HKD arrives for your USD, which combines the markup and the fee.
When you pay by card abroad, you can get a choice between your own currency and the local one. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It tends to be among the most expensive ways to convert. Choose the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. If you are not in a hurry, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but the target may never be reached.
Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Bundling smaller transfers also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
The countries behind USD and HKD
US Dollar is used in United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama. Hong Kong Dollar is the official currency of Hong Kong SAR China. This matters for anyone who earns in one of these currencies and spends in the other.
There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert USD to HKD: moving abroad, studying, doing business or sending a gift. What suits one case may not suit another: a one-off large payment calls for the best rate, while regular small amounts are more sensitive to fixed fees.
Payout methods vary from country to country. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet and in certain countries payout to a mobile wallet is the norm. Have the recipient’s full details ready before you begin.
Where the cost of converting USD to HKD hides
Nearly every bank and app do not convert at the mid-market rate itself. Instead they shift the rate in their own favour and earn on the difference. That gap is called the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 USD on every 100 USD, without it ever appearing as a fee.
Besides the hidden margin, a lot of services add a visible fee. It may be a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments other banks along the route may take their own cut, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Take a close look at offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The reliable test is the total amount that arrives in HKD for exactly the same sum, and that is the figure our table ranks on.
Recent movement in the USD/HKD rate
Over the past twelve months, the exchange rate has changed by +0.98%. In that period the top of the range was 7.8483 HKD for one USD, and the lowest was 7.7698. Today’s rate of 7.8458 sits somewhere inside that range.
The spread between the year’s extremes shows how much the rate can move in practice. For a bigger amount, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, occasionally more than the difference between providers.
The rate reflects central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.
