Converting US Dollar into Silver at a glance

This page follows the rate for US Dollar (USD) and Silver (XAG) and compares it with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. On October 30, 2026, 1 USD buys 0.019972 XAG, while a single XAG equals 50.0692 USD.

The figure at the top is the mid-market rate. It is calculated as the middle of the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. It works as the cleanest reference you can get: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why consumers almost never receive it in full.

What you actually receive is shaped by two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Further down we explain how those costs work, put them side by side and give concrete ways to get closer to the mid-market rate when you swap US Dollar for Silver.

What 1,000.00 USD gets you in XAG

Let’s use a conversion of 1,000.00 USD. At the mid-market rate of 0.019972, that sum sets the ceiling for what is possible on the XAG side. In practice nobody hands over that full amount, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.

Of the 4 providers we compared, Revolut delivered the most and paid out 19.87 XAG after all costs. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is what the conversion actually cost you.

Keep in mind that rankings shift with the amount you send. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, whereas the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Run your own figure through the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.

How the USD/XAG precious metal price works

Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, equal to roughly 31.1 grams. The codes XAU, XAG, XPT and XPD stand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, which is why they appear here like any other currency. One unit in this pair means one troy ounce.

What you see is the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, because of manufacturing and dealer costs. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.

Ownership comes in more than one shape. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. Vault storage through a dealer comes with storage costs but takes care of security. Paper products track the price but do not always give you physical metal.

Check how tax applies as well. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.

Getting the most XAG for your USD

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A low headline fee proves nothing when the margin is high. The fairest figure to compare is the amount received, which combines margin and fee.

At foreign tills and cash machines, you can get a choice between your own currency and the local one. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. It tends to be among the most expensive ways to convert. Choose the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.

Timing can also matter. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, a rate alert or limit order lets you convert automatically once USD/XAG reaches a level you choose. That avoids guessing, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Sending less often but in larger amounts means fixed charges hit you fewer times.

Sending a larger amount from USD to XAG

Make sure the provider is licensed. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.

Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.

For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

How our USD/XAG comparison works

We start from the live mid-market rate for USD/XAG. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, and work out how much XAG the recipient would end up with. We do this for 4 providers, so you can see the differences at a glance.

The figures refresh every half hour, so the page reflects the market of October 30, 2026. The final price is always set by the provider itself, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.

We are not owned by any provider. Some of the links are affiliate links, which help pay for the site. They have no influence on the order: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.

Exchange rate markup and fees on USD/XAG

Most providers stay away from the rate of 0.019972 itself. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and pocket the gap. This is known as the markup. If the margin is 2%, then you lose roughly 2 USD on every 100 USD, without it ever appearing as a fee.

On top of the margin, a lot of services ask for a separate fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network extra deductions can follow, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.

Take a close look at services that advertise free transfers. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The reliable test is how much XAG the recipient ends up with for an identical USD amount, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.

One year of USD to XAG

Across the last year, the USD/XAG rate shows a change of +55.35%. Within those twelve months the highest level was 0.019972 XAG for one USD, and the bottom of the range was 0.011177. Today’s rate of 0.019972 can be measured against those two levels.

That range between high and low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, occasionally more than the difference between providers.

Rates are pushed around by central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
