The XAG/XPT exchange rate: rate, costs and context
This overview brings together the exchange rate between Silver (XAG) and Platinum (XPT) and sets it next to the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. As of October 31, 2026, 1 XAG equals 0.034417 XPT, while 1 XPT comes to 29.0558 XAG.
That headline number is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between the price at which large banks buy XAG and the price at which they sell it. It works as a neutral benchmark: no fee or margin is built in, and that is why you rarely get it as a private customer.
The amount that lands in the other account depends on two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and any fixed or percentage fee. In the sections below we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and list practical steps to lose less on the exchange when you swap Silver for Platinum.
How GoldexPay compares XAG to XPT providers
We start from the live mid-market rate for XAG/XPT. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, to calculate what actually arrives in XPT. The comparison covers 0 providers, placed side by side.
Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 31, 2026. Always check the final quote in the provider’s app or website, and it can differ slightly from our calculation, especially when markets are busy.
GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links, which help pay for the site. That never changes the ranking: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
Troy ounces, spot price and premiums
Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, which is about 31.1 grams. XAU is the code for gold, XAG for silver, XPT for platinum and XPD for palladium, and they are treated like a currency in this pair. One unit in this pair means one troy ounce.
The rate is based on the spot price: the market price for big bars traded between dealers. Buy a coin or small bar and you pay a premium on top, because of manufacturing and dealer costs. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.
Ownership comes in more than one shape. Keeping coins or bars yourself means arranging storage and insurance. Vault storage through a dealer costs a yearly fee, with the metal registered to you. Exchange-traded products give exposure to the price, not always to the metal itself.
Tax rules also differ. Within the EU investment gold usually carries no VAT, unlike most silver. The information here is meant as background, not as advice.
Mid-market rate versus the rate you get
Most providers do not convert at the mid-market rate itself. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and keep the difference. People call this the spread. With a 2% markup, for instance, about 2 out of every 100 XAG never reach the recipient.
On top of the margin, many providers ask for a separate fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a percentage of the amount or a mix of both. With international bank payments the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.
Take a close look at anything sold as commission-free. The cost often sits in the rate instead. The only fair way to compare is the final XPT figure for exactly the same sum, and the comparison table on this page is ranked on exactly that.
Silver against Platinum: the last twelve months
Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate shows a change of -9.34%. During that year the highest level was 0.041283 XPT per XAG, and the low point came in at 0.034115. At 0.034417, the rate today is easy to place within that band.
The distance between the high and the low shows how much the rate can move in practice. On a large conversion, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, even when the fee stays the same.
The rate reflects news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you want to act on a certain rate, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.
Tips for converting XAG to XPT
Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little because the margin can make up the difference. What you want to know is the XPT amount after every cost, which combines the markup and the fee.
When you pay by card abroad, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.
Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. For transfers that can wait, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It saves you from checking the rate every day, though there is no guarantee the rate will get there.
The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Bundling smaller transfers reduces what you pay in flat fees.
Before you send: security and large amounts
Make sure the provider is licensed. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
