What BTRLRO22 means for a payment to Banca Transilvania S.A.
The 8-character code BTRLRO22 and the full code BTRLRO22XXX refer to the same bank: Banca Transilvania S.A.. Banks worldwide use BIC codes to route international transfers to the correct bank. It comes up mostly for payments that cross a border or a currency.
We wrote this page to help people who pays into an account at Banca Transilvania S.A.. Keep in mind that the SWIFT code only identifies the bank, not the person: the account number or IBAN takes care of that.
Paying into Banca Transilvania S.A. in RON
Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON). Money sent in a different currency is exchanged into RON before it reaches the account. You rarely see a separate line for that conversion.
Which bank converts the payment makes a difference: every bank has its own margin. In many cases it is cheaper if you send RON directly via a transfer service with a good rate, so that the receiving bank does not need to convert again.
The RON rate changes constantly, so the amount you see is usually only valid for a short time. For recurring payments, a slightly better rate add up over a year.
Choosing between the 104 SWIFT codes of Banca Transilvania S.A.
With 104 codes in 73 cities, Banca Transilvania S.A. is one of the banks that use separate codes for parts of the organisation. The head office code is BTRLRO22XXX.
In most cases there is no need to look up a branch: payments addressed to BTRLRO22XXX are routed within Banca Transilvania S.A. correctly. A branch code only makes sense if the recipient’s bank explicitly asks for it.
The best way is to take the code straight from the account holder’s invoice. Codes for branches are more likely to be retired than the head office code when a bank merges or closes offices.
Before you send: check the Banca Transilvania S.A. code
Have the recipient copy the account details straight from their online banking. Compare that code against BTRLRO22 here and ask if anything does not match.
An incorrect BIC may lead to a delay, a payment being sent back or extra fees for investigation. An error in the account number can be more serious, because the money may be credited to someone else.
A format check in your banking app merely tells you that the IBAN exists. More and more banks compare the name against the account before you confirm; take any warning seriously. When you pay someone new, some people send a small test amount before sending the rest.
BTRLRO22 or BTRLRO22XXX – which one to use?
Every SWIFT/BIC code starts with the same eight core characters: four letters for the bank, two letters for the country and a two-character location code. That gives you BTRLRO22, the short form of the code.
Most banks and apps accept both lengths. If a form asks for eleven characters, enter BTRLRO22XXX, otherwise BTRLRO22 is fine.
Enter the code in one piece, in upper case and without separators. Pasting the code is safer than typing it by hand: a typo can point to another bank.
Transfer times and tracking a payment to Banca Transilvania S.A.
There is no single delivery time for international payments: many land within a day. Bank holidays in either country add extra days, since banks do not process on those days. Extra checks on larger or unusual payments can also cause a delay.
When a payment takes longer than expected, contact your bank about the tracking status so they can trace it along the chain. Save your transfer receipt until the money has arrived – you will need it for any trace request.
If the money does not arrive after a few business days, the person who paid needs to contact the bank that sent it rather than Banca Transilvania S.A.. As a recipient, it helps to check your account for a partial amount.
Where our SWIFT data comes from
Our SWIFT/BIC directory draws on public sources. It can happen that information here is no longer current, for example after a merger. Figures such as the number of codes are from our directory and may differ from what Banca Transilvania S.A. publishes.
See our directory here as a handy check, and let the details from the recipient or Banca Transilvania S.A. have the final say. GoldexPay is a comparison service for money transfers and not part of Banca Transilvania S.A.. Spotted an error? Tell us through the contact page.
Protect yourself against fake payment requests
Scammers regularly use fake invoices with changed bank details, sometimes in an email that looks completely genuine. The fact that BTRLRO22 exists does not mean that a request mentioning it is genuine; criminals use the codes of real banks too.
Always verify changed bank details through a phone call. Pressure and secrecy are red flags; a genuine business can wait for you to check. Already paid? Contact your bank straight away and have them start a recall; also report it to the police.
Scams also target the receiver. Someone sends too much and asks you to refund the difference via a different route. A payment confirmation from the sender proves nothing; only your own account shows what has arrived.
Receiving money from abroad at Banca Transilvania S.A.
If you expect a payment from another country, give the sender a complete set of details. Share the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, SWIFT code BTRLRO22XXX and your address.
You can include Banca Transilvania S.A. and its city as well, since some forms ask for it. Double-check every detail before you send them.
The amount you receive can be less than what was sent. Correspondent banks can take a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate applies. On invoices, it is common to state who bears the costs to avoid a shortfall.
What a transfer from Banca Transilvania S.A. abroad really costs
If you send money to another country through Banca Transilvania S.A., the visible fee is only part of the cost. You pay the fee for the transfer itself, sometimes fees charged by intermediary banks along the way and, most importantly, the margin on the exchange rate if the currency changes.
That exchange rate margin is often the biggest cost, and it is easy to miss. Compare the rate you are offered against the mid-market rate – the rate you find on financial news sites; the gap is what conversion costs you.
For many routes, a specialist provider is cheaper than a bank, mainly because of the exchange rate. GoldexPay compares these services side by side, showing the amount the recipient gets for the same amount sent. Using a transfer service does not mean closing your account at Banca Transilvania S.A..
SEPA payments and the Banca Transilvania S.A. BIC
Since Romania is in SEPA, a euro payment to Banca Transilvania S.A. from within the SEPA area usually only needs the IBAN. Many banks no longer ask for the BIC for these payments or fill it in for you.
You still need BTRLRO22XXX when sending payments in other currencies or money from outside the SEPA area. Some banks and apps still ask for the BIC out of habit; if so, fill in BTRLRO22 or BTRLRO22XXX.
Instant payments in euros have become widely supported within SEPA – whether Banca Transilvania S.A. offers them for your account is worth checking. Fees for SEPA transfers are generally low.
