A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- SCUR Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- ES Country code

- M1 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
Finding a SWIFT code in Spain
In Spain we have 933 SWIFT/BIC codes from 581 banks. A SWIFT code shows the banks handling a transfer exactly which bank is meant to get an international payment.
Choose a bank below to see its head office code and its other codes, plus practical notes for sending and receiving money. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, the cost of transfers and how to avoid mistakes before you send money.
How reliable is this list?
Ask the recipient to send you their bank details straight from a recent statement. An incorrect BIC can cause a delay, a returned payment or extra fees, so compare it with the list on this page.
We gather SWIFT/BIC codes from publicly available data and update our list from time to time. Even so, banks merge, rename themselves or change codes and our data may lag behind. Before any payment of any size, confirm the BIC with the recipient. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site.
Fraudsters regularly send fake invoices with new bank details from what looks like a familiar address. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about whether a request is genuine: criminals use real codes too.

BNP Paribas Securities Services, Spain and its SWIFT codes
In our data, BNP Paribas Securities Services, Spain holds the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in Spain. Its head office code is PARBESMHXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.
Practice differs in whether they register branch codes, so the count is not a ranking of size. If not the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code PARBESMHXXX works for transfers to this bank.
The cheapest way to send money to Spain
When you transfer money to Spain with a regular bank, the stated fee is only part of what you pay. You pay a transfer fee, possibly charges from intermediary banks and, above all, the margin on the exchange rate if the money is converted.
The markup on the rate tends to be the biggest cost item. An easy check: put the rate you get next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.
For a lot of routes, a transfer service is less expensive than a traditional bank transfer. GoldexPay lists these providers side by side, showing what actually arrives in Spain.
SEPA transfers to Spain
Since Spain is in SEPA, a euro payment to a bank in Spain normally requires just an IBAN. Most banking apps do not require the BIC in that case.
The BIC still matter for payments in other currencies and for transfers from outside SEPA. SEPA transfers normally land within one business day or faster with instant payments. As long as the payment stays in euros, a SEPA transfer tends to be inexpensive.
Incoming international payments in Spain
Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details from you. That means: your full name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and, often, your address.
Your bank’s code appears in the list on this page but always compare it with your own bank details. Certain sending banks may also ask for the name and address of your bank; it does no harm to include it.
The amount you receive can be less than the amount sent. Correspondent banks can take a fee, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate applies. For business payments, state how the fees are split to avoid a shortfall.
Paying in EUR: what conversion costs you
The local currency of Spain is the Euro (EUR). A payment in a foreign currency will be exchanged into EUR on its way to the recipient.
Which bank converts the payment matters, because each party uses its own rate. Often you pay less if you send EUR straight away through a transfer service that converts near the mid-market rate. On larger amounts, even a small difference in the rate adds up quickly.
Tracking a payment to Spain
How quickly money arrives in Spain depends on several factors: the currency, the number of banks in between, cut-off times and differences in time zone. Transfers sent late in the day or on weekends and holidays usually start the next business day.
Many banks use SWIFT gpi, which lets them follow a payment from bank to bank. Every payment gets a unique transaction reference, the UETR that banks can use to see where the money is. Specialist transfer services often provide a status online so you can follow the payment.
Recognising a SWIFT code from Spain
A BIC is 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. It starts with a four-letter bank code, followed by a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
You can spot a bank code from Spain by letters five and six. If the country letters point to another country, the code belongs to a bank in another country – worth double-checking.
If the last three are XXX, it means the main office. For most transfers the head office code is fine.
