Finding a SWIFT code in Spain

Here you will find codes for 581 banks in Spain – 933 codes altogether. You need such a code mainly for payments across borders, and especially for payments in foreign currencies.

Every bank has its own page with its main code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. Below the list you can read how codes from Spain are built, how to send money to Spain at a fair price and how to check a code before you pay.

When does money sent to Spain arrive?

How quickly money reaches Spain depends on several factors: which currency you send, the number of banks in between, daily processing deadlines and differences in time zone. Payments made late in the day or just before weekends and holidays usually go out the next business day.

If a transfer is delayed, ask the sender to contact the sending bank; only the sending side can start an official trace. Save the payment confirmation until the money has arrived; a bank needs it to start a trace.

Incoming international payments in Spain

If you expect money from abroad on an account in Spain, give the sender a complete set of details. Give them the account holder’s name, the IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and your address.

Find your bank in the list on this page and compare the code with your own bank details. It helps to include your bank’s name and city, since some payment forms ask for it.

What lands in your account can be less than what was sent. Charges on incoming payments vary per bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. On invoices, agree how the fees are split.

The cheapest way to send money to Spain

The price of a payment to Spain has more than one component – not only the fee you see. On top of a fixed fee, correspondent banks can deduct a charge and, if currencies are converted, the bank often applies a rate below the real market rate.

That exchange rate margin is often the largest cost item. Compare the rate you are offered against the mid-market rate.

For many routes, a transfer service turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer – mostly thanks to the exchange rate. On GoldexPay we compare what recipients in Spain receive with different services, so you can pick the cheapest route.

The largest SWIFT network in Spain: BNP Paribas Securities Services, Spain

BNP Paribas Securities Services, Spain leads our list of Spain banks when it comes to SWIFT/BIC codes. Its main office has PARBESMHXXX and that code covers most payments.

A large number of codes often means that the bank registers branches and departments separately – it says nothing about the size of the bank as such. Unless a branch code is given, PARBESMHXXX is fine for transfers to this bank.

How SWIFT codes from Spain are built

SWIFT/BIC codes follow the same format worldwide: 8 characters plus an optional three-character extension. Characters one to four identify the bank, characters five and six are the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.

You can recognise a code from Spain by the fifth and sixth characters. A code with other letters in that position come from another country.

An 11-character code ends in three characters for a branch. Use a branch code only when the recipient’s bank asks for it.

Verifying a SWIFT code from Spain

The safest source for the BIC is the recipient’s own bank details – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. If the code you have does not match the code listed here, do not guess – contact the recipient or their bank.

We collect SWIFT/BIC codes from public sources and check our list regularly. Even so, banks merge, rename themselves or retire codes. Treat this list as a reference rather than the last word: the bank details from the recipient come first. We are an independent comparison site.

Scammers often use payment requests with new bank details. Always confirm a change of bank details through a separate channel.

Paying in euros to Spain

Spain is part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). For a standard euro transfer within SEPA, the IBAN is usually enough.

You will still need a SWIFT code for non-euro payments or transfers from countries outside SEPA. Euro payments within SEPA usually arrive by the next business day. Fees are generally low as long as everything stays in euros.

Banks in Spain beginning with the letter :letter

This list only shows the banks in Spain whose name starts with :letter in alphabetical order. The totals mentioned above always cover the whole country and not only this selection.

Some banks appear under their official name. Use the full list for Spain if you do not know the exact name.

Sending EUR to Spain

Most accounts in Spain are typically held in EUR – the Euro. A payment in a foreign currency will be converted into EUR on its way to the recipient – and the bank that does it picks the rate.

Where the conversion happens affects how much arrives, as rates and margins differ per bank. In many cases it is cheaper to send EUR directly via a provider that converts near the mid-market rate. With bigger transfers, even a small gap in the rate adds up quickly.
