- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- ES Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- M1 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
Bank SWIFT codes for Spain
On this page you find the SWIFT/BIC codes of 581 institutions in Spain, 933 codes in all. A SWIFT code tells the banks handling a transfer which institution should receive an international payment.
Each bank is listed with its own page with the head office code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, what transfers cost and how to avoid mistakes before a payment.
Paying in euros to Spain
Spain is part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), the zone for uniform euro payments. For a standard euro transfer from another SEPA country, the IBAN is usually enough.
You will still need a SWIFT code for non-euro payments or money from outside the SEPA area. Euro payments within SEPA usually arrive within one business day. Costs stay low provided no currency is converted.
Paying in EUR: what conversion costs you
Spain pays in the Euro. Money sent in a different currency is exchanged into EUR on its way to the recipient, and whoever converts it chooses the rate.
Who converts the money matters, because each party uses its own rate. Check how much EUR the recipient gets with several providers. On larger amounts, even a small difference in the rate can be worth more than the fee.
When does money sent to Spain arrive?
There is no single delivery time for transfers to Spain: some land the same day or the next. Payments made after the cut-off time or on a weekend or public holiday usually start the next business day.
If the money seems late, ask the sender to contact the sending bank for a trace; only the sending side can start an official trace. Save your transfer receipt until the recipient confirms – you will need it if something goes wrong.

If the bank you need is missing under :letter, check another letter. Use the full list for Spain when you do not know how the name is spelled.
Verifying a SWIFT code from Spain
The most reliable source for the BIC is the recipient’s own bank details. An incorrect BIC can cause a delay, a returned payment or additional charges.
The directory on GoldexPay is based on public sources. Even so, banks merge or change codes, so information can be out of date. Before any payment that matters, confirm the code with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is an independent comparison service for money transfers, not a bank.
Scammers regularly use fake invoices carrying changed bank details from what looks like a familiar address. Before paying, verify changed details by phone.
What a transfer to Spain really costs
When you send money to Spain with your bank, the stated fee is only part of the cost. On top of a fixed fee, intermediary banks may deduct a charge and, if currencies are converted, the bank usually uses a less favourable rate than the real market rate.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate, rather than in the fee: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. Compare the rate you are offered with the mid-market rate, the midpoint you see on financial news sites. The difference is your real cost.
Money transfer services frequently offer a rate near the mid-market rate with clearer fees. GoldexPay lists transfer services side by side, showing what actually arrives in Spain.
What the letters in a Spain BIC mean
A BIC is either 8 or 11 characters long and follows a fixed pattern. First comes a four-letter bank code, then two letters for the country and a two-character location code.
For banks in Spain, letters five and six are the ISO country code of Spain – that is the quickest way to spot one. A code with a different country code belong to another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.
An 11-character code ends in a branch code – XXX stands for the head office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
Incoming international payments in Spain
If you are waiting for a payment from another country in Spain, send the payer a complete set of details. In practice that means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and, often, your postal address.
Find the bank in the list on this page. Some sending banks also want your bank’s address.
Do not be surprised if the incoming amount is smaller than the amount on the sender’s receipt. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee, your bank may charge for incoming payments, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate comes on top. Make clear with the sender who covers the fees before the money is sent.
