Binance vs Gemini
Choosing between Binance and Gemini comes down to more than the brand name. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are added up. That is the gap we measure here.
In our database, Binance falls into the crypto exchange group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Gemini belongs to crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.
How we compare Binance and Gemini
Every provider earns money in two ways: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The numbers decide, not the commission.
Small amounts vs large amounts
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Why not use both?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. It is perfectly normal to keep Binance for one task and Gemini for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.
If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Same category, different details
Both Binance and Gemini sit in the crypto exchange category, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.
Start with coverage: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. On paper, Binance supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies and Gemini supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.
Which one is cheaper?
For 4 out of 4 comparisons we can test on both sides, Binance came out cheaper at live rates. On price alone, that makes Binance the default pick.
This does not rule out Gemini. The scenario table above shows the routes where Gemini does better, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, Gemini is simply the cheaper option for you.
There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Gemini. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Who should pick Binance and who Gemini?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
What to compare between two exchanges
Comparing Binance and Gemini as exchanges means looking at more than one fee. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Deposits and withdrawals deserve a separate look. How you fund your account, by bank transfer, card or another method, changes the cost. Withdrawing coins to your own wallet comes with a network or withdrawal fee that varies per asset.
And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Leaving assets on a platform means trusting it to keep them safe. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.
How fast the money arrives
Fastest delivery: Instant at Binance and Instant at Gemini. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Also look beyond the conversion: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
