Binance versus Kraken: what each one really costs
Deciding between Binance and Kraken is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are added up. That is the gap we measure here.
In our comparison, Binance belongs to the crypto exchange group and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Kraken belongs to crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say something about when one can stand in for the other.
Below the calculator we explain how we work out the cost, what each one is good at and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.
Regulation and safety
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Binance vs Kraken as crypto exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. First the spread: the difference between buy and sell price on a simple purchase. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Deposits and withdrawals deserve a separate look. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.
Finally, think about custody. As long as your crypto sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys. Whether you keep coins on Binance, on Kraken or in your own wallet, factor that choice into the cost.
How fast the money arrives
Fastest delivery: Instant at Binance and Instant at Kraken. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.
The fee is only half the story
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
So we never compare fees on their own. Binance and Kraken may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.
The right choice depends on what you do
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
How the numbers are worked out
Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Small amounts vs large amounts
The size of the amount can change the winner. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Using both, or switching
Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.
If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Two rivals in the same category
Both Binance and Kraken sit in the crypto exchange category, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.
Check the basics: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. Binance handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Kraken handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
Which one is cheaper?
For 4 out of 4 comparisons that both providers offer, Binance came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes Binance the default pick.
Still, Kraken is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find where Kraken comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, Kraken is simply the cheaper option for you.
Price is also not the only factor. You may already have a verified account with Kraken, which saves a sign-up. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
