Bitfinex versus Finst: what each one really costs
Choosing between Bitfinex and Finst comes down to more than the brand name. The real question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup are added up. This page puts a number on that.
On our site, Bitfinex belongs to the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Finst belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says something about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table you can read how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and who should pick which. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.
How we calculate the cost
Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. Before a big transfer with Bitfinex or Finst, read the current pricing on their site.
Our verdict
For 3 out of 3 conversions that both providers offer, Finst delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Finst the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out Bitfinex. Scroll back to the table to find where Bitfinex comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Bitfinex. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Where the real cost hides
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
Switching between Bitfinex and Finst
You do not have to pick just one. It is perfectly normal to keep Bitfinex for one task and Finst for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It takes a minute and can save real money.
When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.
Safety checks before you sign up
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
Which one suits you?
For travel spending, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
How fast the money arrives
Fastest delivery: Instant at Bitfinex and Instant at Finst. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Same category, different details
Both Bitfinex and Finst sit in the crypto exchange category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.
Look at coverage first: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Bitfinex handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Finst handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
What to compare between two exchanges
With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Deposits and withdrawals deserve a separate look. A bank transfer is usually the cheapest way to fund an account; a card is faster but pricier. Withdrawal fees on coins vary a lot, so check the asset you plan to move.
Finally, think about custody. As long as your crypto sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.
