Bitfinex or Kraken: a side-by-side cost check
Choosing between Bitfinex and Kraken is rarely about the logo. What matters is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.
In our database, Bitfinex belongs to the crypto exchange category and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Kraken belongs to crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Below the calculator we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.
Small amounts vs large amounts
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Comparing two crypto exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. There is the spread, the gap between the buy and sell price, which you pay on instant purchases. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Moving money in and out also costs something. A bank transfer is usually the cheapest way to fund an account; a card is faster but pricier. Withdrawing coins to your own wallet comes with a network or withdrawal fee that varies per asset.
Custody is the last point. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. If you plan to move coins to your own wallet, include the withdrawal fee in your comparison.
Which one is cheaper?: Bitfinex is cheaper more often
For 4 out of 4 comparisons we can test on both sides, Bitfinex left you with more money after fees and rate margin. On price alone, that makes Bitfinex the default pick.
That does not make Kraken the wrong choice. Check the table above to see the routes where Kraken does better, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Kraken. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Regulation and safety
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
With crypto platforms, look a little further: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Speed and convenience
Fastest delivery: Instant at Bitfinex and Instant at Kraken. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Who should pick Bitfinex and who Kraken?
For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
If you send money abroad regularly, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.
If you want to buy crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
The fee is only half the story
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Using both, or switching
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.
Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
Like for like: Bitfinex and Kraken
Bitfinex and Kraken belong to the same category, crypto exchange, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.
Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. On paper, Bitfinex supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies and Kraken supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, along with practical matters such as the app and customer service. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.
Our method
There are two parts to the price of any conversion: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The numbers decide, not the commission.
