Binance or Bitfinex

Choosing between Binance and Bitfinex comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.

On our site, Binance belongs to the crypto exchange group and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Bitfinex belongs to crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and how to combine the two. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.

Two rivals in the same category

Binance and Bitfinex are both in our crypto exchange category, so they compete for the same customers. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Binance handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Bitfinex handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.

Is your money safe?

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

Which one suits you?

For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Binance vs Bitfinex as crypto exchanges

With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. First the spread: the difference between buy and sell price on a simple purchase. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.

Moving money in and out also costs something. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. Withdrawal fees on coins vary a lot, so check the asset you plan to move.

Custody is the last point. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Whether you keep coins on Binance, on Bitfinex or in your own wallet, factor that choice into the cost.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With Binance or Bitfinex, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Speed: Binance vs Bitfinex

Binance lists its quickest option as Instant, while Bitfinex lists Instant. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Our method

The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

The fee is only half the story

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

Can you use Binance and Bitfinex together?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.

Verdict: Binance wins on cost

For 4 out of 4 conversions that Binance and Bitfinex both support, Binance left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Binance the edge for most typical transfers.

This does not rule out Bitfinex. The scenario table above shows where Bitfinex comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Bitfinex may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
