Bitfinex versus Bybit: a side-by-side cost check

Picking Bitfinex or Bybit is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.

On our site, Bitfinex sits in the crypto exchange group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Bybit belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about where they overlap and where they do not.

Further down this page we explain how we work out the cost, where each provider tends to do well and who should pick which. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.

Why the amount can change the winner

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. With Bitfinex or Bybit, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Using both, or switching

You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

Our method

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Our verdict

Across 4 of the 4 scenarios that Bitfinex and Bybit both support, Bybit delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Bybit the edge for most typical transfers.

Still, Bitfinex is not out of the race. Check the table above to see which conversions Bitfinex still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

Price is also not the only factor. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Bitfinex. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

What to compare between two exchanges

With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.

Moving money in and out also costs something. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. Withdrawing coins to your own wallet comes with a network or withdrawal fee that varies per asset.

And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. If you plan to move coins to your own wallet, include the withdrawal fee in your comparison.

Speed and convenience

The fastest delivery we have on record for Bitfinex is Instant; for Bybit it is Instant. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

Speed often depends on how you pay. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Same category, different details

Bitfinex and Bybit belong to the same category, crypto exchange, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.

Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. Bitfinex handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Bybit handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

Then compare price on the route you actually use, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.

Bitfinex or Bybit: which fits your situation?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.

For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Is your money safe?

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
